07-07-2007, 8:19 PM tal93 Joined on 07-08-2007 Posts 14 umd copying I've found out that the specs for dvd dl and umd are the same: dvd uses iso 9660, is read by a red laser and is manufactured at 660nm umd uses iso 9660, is read by a red laser and is manufactured at 660nm. the only difference is physical: dvd dl is 12cm wide, umd is 6cm wide and the hole in the middle is smaller. sony never created a new format, they just shrank a dual-layer dvd. so if someone could put a small psp file on a dvd r dl cut it and put something in the middle to make the hole smaller and stick in a umd caddy id like to know how it turns out. if this works it will help with hacking, someone could backup their 2.0 gta cut the file size by removing videos, radio, player models, etc.  they could cut  it to about  20  meg  and  put  it  up for download, people with the 2.6 gta could burn this to dvd dl and do the physical modifications to fit it in a psp. could someone with a modded psp and a spare dvd dl to waste back up a umd and try this. im not responsible if you brick your psp doing this, it's your choice if you do this.    Report

08-17-2007, 7:47 PM Koelslaw Joined on 08-18-2007 Posts 1 Re: umd copying I read this post and was i saw a different angle on it. why modify the UMD when you could modify a DVD-Rom Drive. Remove components from the psp and apply them to a computer disc drive. If they use the same laser i am sure that the connections are similar enough to allow them to be soldered. I am not sure if entire UMD games could even be boot through a mem stick cause of how sony likes to make the firmware. Depending how what the clearances are the only component that may need to be remove is the motor or the the post the mounts to the motor inside the UMD tray. Of course if you move the motor from the PSP over than it may run on a different voltage/Freq. And a  nother thing to speculate is how are you going to get a Blank UMD. I doubt the UMD format is rewritable. If this has already been done and i am jsut behind the power curve lemme know.    Report

09-27-2007, 3:10 PM DarkPier0692 Joined on 06-10-2007 Posts 2 Re: umd copying i had the same idea about three months back, and using my knowledge of computers i did build a drive to read UMD's on a computer, but as of yet, i cannot read a UMD on the computer, it always says "disk not ready" perhaps the sectors are too small? perhaps it would require a special driver? anyways, this project is out of my hands.  >.> and so is that dvd burner i wasted building the drive    Report
