YouTube Video on the PSP
Article Mirrored from: http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/viewArticle.asp?articleID=13105

Maybe you’re new to the world-wide-web and you’ve never heard of the viral phenomenon youtube (quick—check for a pulse!). Last week I wrote an in-depth article on the 18-month-old website, detailing its rise from a fledging start-up domain to what has now become the 13th most popular website in the world. (For those of you who are unfamiliar with the site, I suggest you read that article.)

I should have mentioned in that last article, though, how it was unfortunate that you can’t download the videos off of youtube to store them on your iPod, PSP, or at the very least—your computer. After all, Google Video lets you do it! But let’s say you’re one of those Backstreet Boys fans (yeah, I know you’re out there) who sneaks to the video of the band’s January concert in Korea. Don’t you find it frustrating that you can’t just go to any song in their set that night, but have to watch through the entire performance to get to the one you really like . . . because your computer can’t load the video much faster then it’s streaming it to you (thus hindering you from skipping ahead)? Or maybe you’re a sucker for English comedy (like me) and keep going back to watch your favorite Mr. Bean episode or Monty Python sketch. Wouldn’t it just be so much easier if you could save the whole video to your computer to watch it later when you’re offline, without having to worry about bandwidth and connection speed?

Well . . . now you can!

Thanks to new technology—and the wonderful non-geek-geeks that come up with this stuff!—there are now two programs out there that allow you to save any and all of youtube’s videos to your computer.

1. For PC Users (*sigh* you Mac guys can use it too) the process is as easy as copy-and-paste. Direct your browser to your favorite youtube video clip and copy the URL. Then motor on over to http://www.video4ipod.org/ and copy that link into the space provided there. Click ‘convert’ and that’s all there is to it. When your computer is finished converting the video to your computer in an MP4 format, iTunes will automatically open, with your file waiting to be viewed.

Note: You need to have the following FREE components installed to convert and watch your videos: iTunes and Java.

2. For Mac Users who just don’t want to do what all the PC guys are doing, you can pay 15 bucks for the nifty little application ‘tubeSock’ (http://www.stinkbot.com/Tubesock/index.html) which will do virtually the same thing. Working with iTunes, you copy the URL into the program, and it’ll quickly convert the video to your computer.

In my opinion, the video4ipod.org site is best for all users because it allows you to not only convert youtube clips, but other video files as well; so long as you provide an accurate link.

This is a convenient shortcut to all the good things that youtube has to offer . . . and a hedge from the bad. After all; who needs to spend hours searching for that awesome-video-you-saw-last-week-but-now-can’t-remember-the-title-to, or waste your time on ridiculous, low-quality mock-ups. (Since most of youtube’s content is fan/public-submitted, the quality and content of each clip is not guaranteed to be the most pure video out there . . . and I meant ‘pure’ in both senses of the word.)

Technology rushes onward like a flood . . . and we all struggle to stay on top of it all.

I’m here to help paddle.
