Recap of Sony's Announcements at CES - Skype Client, GPS coming, and a few others...

Sony had few announcements regarding the PSP this year, but they didn't have anything to say at last year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES), so this was refreshing :)

Along with the new Mylo personal communicator, the PSP is getting a Skype client now as well, coming in a few weeks. The Skype software will be included with a firmware update, and a separate microphone accessory will be sold so you can talk. Price has not been announced, but my guess would be $20 or less, otherwise it's just too expensive for a small mic. For those of you unawares, Skype is a way to make basically free or next-to-free calls around the Internet.

Yes, they are bringing the GPS unit to the U.S. Right now it's only available in Japan, so by the end of 2008 they will ship a North American version. Price has not been announced, but my guess would be $99 or less. The GPS software will come with the GPS unit. I have photos you can see at my Sony CES Booth photo gallery:

They did mention they're still trying to bring the PSP Camera accessory to the U.S. I don't understand why it's so difficult to get it over here, but whatever. I have two already, muhahahaha :)

Yes, they mentioned a 16 gig memory stick, but who can afford one anyway? Well, neat, but ... well ... how cool is storage?
