Sony Sticking with UMD

Just as it did with MiniDisc (remember that one?), Sony is sticking with the UMD format, even while its prices remain at clearance levels at many stores (say, $5 at Fry's?)...

From the article on Pocket Gamer:

Quite frankly, the PSP's Universal Media Disc format is one big contradiction staring at all of us. For several times already, various sectors of the video game industry told Sony to abandon the format because of several limitations like its size.

Sony, however, has remained adamant all these years. This stand was recently echoed by PlayStation Portable Senior Marketing Manager John Koller as he reiterated the different strengths of the format. He mentioned,

UMD possesses many strengths, from size to form factor to portability. Duplication of UMDs is much easier, cheaper than cartridges. We've really optimized time and cost by going with a disc-based format. UMD is a unique medium to create games and developers need to understand that when tackling the system.

It seems that Koller really believes his own statements because he wasn't afraid to point out the weaknesses of the UMD as well - implying that Sony is not just being stubborn about it. He added, "There's no question the biggest weakness is related to porting games from other platforms. Publishers are concerned about the size of UMD because they can't cram a DVD game on to it".

Given all these, the marketing manager explained that Sony really believes in the format and is not going to drop it. Koller shared, "We'll never walk away from our base. Whether it's movies or game content, third parties have an incredible opportunity to utilize it. The future of UMD is bright".

Off Topic: Microsoft Extends XBox 360 Warranty to *** 3 YEARS ***

Yeah, I was as surprised to hear it as you probably are. Pretty cool in one way... Microsoft is putting $1.5 billion away to cover any warranty issues. I'm not sure what the unforseen problems are, and none of my 3 XBox 360s have failed, although one was DOA and replaced same day, so that's 1:4 failure, but a bad measure :)

BTW, Microsoft says the XBox game unit will be profitable in 2008. Maybe this means we'll get an update to the Zune in 2008 as well? (please?)

Here's the article on News.com:

Microsoft said Thursday that it will take a $1 billion charge as it extends the warranty on the Xbox 360, after an investigation showed the game console can be prone to hardware failures.

"As a result of what Microsoft views as an unacceptable number of repairs to Xbox 360 consoles, the company conducted extensive investigations into potential sources of general hardware failures," Microsoft said in a statement.

Microsoft said its probe found "a number of factors" that can cause a general hardware failure indicated by three red flashing lights on the console. The company said that, in addition to extending the warranty, it has made unspecified design changes to the product.

Microsoft also disclosed Thursday that it failed to reach its target of selling 12 million Xbox 360s by the end of its fiscal year on June 30. The company sold 11.6 million units, CFO Chris Liddell said during a conference call.
