Sony unveils new model PSP

Just like everyone's been speculating Sony has unveiled a new slimmer and lighter PSP boasting HD video output and longer battery life. Here's the scoop from GamesIndustry.biz:
Sony has unveiled a new model PSP at its E3 conference in Los Angeles, with the redesigned handheld launching worldwide this September.

The new console is 33 per cent lighter, slimmer, has a more efficient battery and will produce quicker load times, according to Sony boss Kaz Hirai.

The console will come in a variety of SKU's, with Jack Tretton showing off a silver model as well as a Star Wars-themed PSP to tie-in with the release of the latest Star Wars Battlefront game.

SCEJ and SCEE are to announce separate colours and branding for their own territories.

All new model PSPs will retail for USD 199, with Sony offering a entertainment pack in the US including Daxter, a 1GB Memory Stick and Family Guy UMD.

Sony also revealed that UMD sales have risen 35 per cent since 2006, with weekly sales in the US leaping 90 per cent since the recent price cut.

Sales of PS3 double following price cut

(Note that this is SELL-IN, not SELL-THROUGH)... Sales may have increased to retailers, but that doesn't mean the systems will be flying off the shelves... Gotta have games (or Blu-Ray discs) for that ;) -Auri

Sony to ship 11 million consoles by end of the year

It may only be days since Sony announced a USD 100 price cut for the PlayStation 3, but according to SCEA boss Jack Tretton sales have doubled in North America.

Now selling for USD 499, sales have shot up at five of North America's leading retailers.

"Since Monday, sales of the 60GB PS3 have doubled at our top five retailers," said Tretton during Sony's E3 conference.

The company said that it now hopes to ship at least 11 million units by the end of this year.

Although boosting sales, some publishers have expressed doubts that the price cut will have a significant effect on sales in the long term, with Square Enix president John Yamamoto telling GamesIndustry.biz, "I think USD 500 for PS3 is still a bit expensive for most gamers."
