Survey reveals more PS3 connectivity options

PlayStation Underground members recently received a survey, grilling them on potential PSP-PS3 connectivity features. While surveys aren't necessarily indicators of services to be offered, they do show what the company is experimenting with. Some potential ideas thrown around in the survey include:
  • Use the device to complete side missions for console games (unlockables, etc.).
  • Transfer media (music/pictures/video) wirelessly from the console to the device (broadcast television, new levels for games).
  • Use the device WHILE PLAYING the console game as an additional weapon/utility to help the gameplay (2nd player option, radar for incoming enemies, etc.).
  • Record console gameplay video for ...

We're most excited by the last option. Unfortunately, it appears to be cut off. Regardless, it's clear from this latest survey that Sony is serious about pursuing PSP-PS3 connectivity.

SCEA: 80 to 100 Layoffs is 'Way High'

Earlier this week, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) confirmed that layoffs had taken place at the Foster City headquarters. The original report from Kotaku claimed that 80 to 100 people lost their jobs. GameDaily BIZ has learned, however, that this figure is not correct.

Dave Karraker, SCEA's Sr. Director, Corporate Communications, informed us that the 80 to 100 number was "way high." In fact, the number was likely around 50 or fewer people. Karraker still declined to give us an exact figure but he advised us that the company did not have to provide a WARN notification.

The WARN Act in the U.S. requires employers to provide written notice at least 60 calendar days in advance of mass layoffs. The exact wording of the act is as follows: "A WARN notice is required when a business with 100 or more full-time workers (not counting workers who have less than 6 months on the job and workers who work fewer than 20 hours per week) is laying off at least 50 people at a single site of employment." Therefore, if SCEA did not trigger the WARN Act, the layoffs had to have been lower than 50 individuals.

GameDaily BIZ originally heard from a former SCEA employee who said that these layoffs "have quietly been going on since the beginning of the year," and were not a recent development. Karraker admitted that some people lost their jobs prior to the recent layoffs, but he said it was nothing out of the ordinary.

Reeves: ‘No PSP phone coming’

SCEE CEO David Reeves has denied that a PSP phone is currently in development following a flurry of internet reports last week.

The news comes following a story by Spong, which suggested that a patent had been registered for a new Sony Ericsson mobile phone which features a moveable screen that swivels 90-degrees into widecreen mode, and which features a button layout similar to that of the PSP.

However, speaking exclusively to MCV, David Reeves has dismissed the suggestion that a PSP phone is on the cards. “I know the head of Sony Ericsson very well,” he said. “He has a Walkman phone and a Cybershot phone available, but I know nothing about a PSP phone.

"I haven’t heard anything about it at all – and I would know. They wouldn’t develop it without our knowledge.”

SCEA Opens Official PlayStation Blog

Today Sony Computer Entertainment Amercia has unveiled their first official and it looks like it's already buzzing with comments. As of right now there are only two posts to we all will have to see how this progresses. Here's what Patrick Seybold, Senior Manager of Public Relations had to say in his welcome message:
It’s with enthusiasm, eagerness and, honestly, a little bit of relief that we lift the cover on our first official Sony Computer Entertainment America company blog - welcome and sorry for the wait.

PlayStation.Blog is a bit of work in progress, we see it as a place where we can share with you our company’s collective insights, opinions and perspectives on all things related to SCEA, PlayStation and the industry we play in.

At the moment, we’re thinking about sharing all sorts of things here, ranging from product news and title announcements to developer updates and industry opinion posts – all of which will come straight from the people here inside SCEA who are working, thinking and playing with this stuff every day. Look to the categories on the sidebar for some initial thoughts we have on future post themes.

Now, what we’ve learned, perhaps the hard way, is that a blog like this is really about you and the things you want to hear, share and discuss with us. With that in mind, you’ll notice that comments are enabled – and encouraged – so tell us what you want to see here and we’ll do our best to make it happen. And yes, like most blogs, we have a comment policy, please just keep this in mind when you’re leaving a comment.

We imagine it may take us a short while to find our pace with this, but bear with us as we get underway and we promise we’ll quickly make this blog a valuable stop in your daily info hunt for PlayStation news.

Like we’ve said, we’re excited to finally have a platform for conversation and connection. Much more is in the works too, so we hope you’ll consider sticking around, kicking the tires of our shiny new blog and sharing what you think.

Enjoy!

Check out the blog for yourself at blog.us.playstation.com and see what you think.
