Team M33 releases 3.71 CFW; M33 = Dark_AleX

Just yesterday Team M33 announced that they are to take a short break before releasing their latest custom firmware to teach lamers how to respect developers. Like true developers, they were true to their word, it was a one day break! Today they have released their latest v3.71 custom firmware for PSP.

Here is the readme:

3.71 M33 by M33=Dark_AleX

Changes in 3.71 M33:
- Now uses 3.71
- VSH Menu is not longer launched using HOME key, but using SELECT now. This is to not interfere with the XMB function of home, which is now more useful in this firmware.
- Psp Slim: umdcache was allocating memory even when homebrew was launched, wasting memory that homebrew programs may want to use. Now umdcache module is stopped before it can allocate any memory, only in the case homebrew is launched. Also, memory is unprotected for user memory usage by M33 core (only when homebrew is launched). Developer, for a sample of how to use the extra memory, see the extra ram sample of the M33 sdk.
- Both version boot now from 3.XX ipl, and are independent of 1.50. The main installer will not install 1.50 kernel anymore. A 1.50 kernel addon for 3.71 M33 that will install inside 3.71 M33 will be released in a few days (for fat only)

Note: due to some changes in kernel nids by Sony, you can expect a lot of kernel plugins not working anymore.

Programmers: refer to the sdk readme for details.

Installation instructions:
First method for both psp, the prefered when possible:
Requeriments: a fat psp slim with 3.52 M33-3 or 3.52 M33-4. Previous versions of M33 won't work, due to a bug that affects them and OE; or a psp slim with 3.60 M33.
- Copy the UPDATE directory into /PSP/GAME/UPDATE and copy the EBOOT.PBP of the 3.71 Sony updater there but with name "371.PBP". Note: the program will not even show if you copy it to a different folder than that.
- If you are in the fat psp, make sure you have configured the psp to run the game folder in the 3.XX kernel.
- Execute the program, it requires 78% of battery. If you have idstorage corrupted due to a downgrader, the program will ask you to correct it automatically so the update can continue.
- Press X, and the Sony updater will begin. Sit and enjoy while Sony code installs 3.71 M33
- When finished, the updater will ask you to reboot (pressing X or O). DO IT. Do not skip this step shutting down the psp by yourself, or you'll end with a brick.
- You should be now in 3.71 M33

Unbricker for both psp slim&fat and 1.50 kernel installer for fat 3.71 M33, will be released in few days... and it will be last thing from me.
YES, M33 is Dark_Alex...Dark_AleX is M33!

Sony PSP 1-SEG digital TV tuner hands-on

Just launched in Japan, Sony's got high hopes for its 1-SEG digital TV tuner -- and with over seven million Japanese PSPs now capable of viewing high quality video over the air (complete with EPG), we can't blame Sony for it's optimism. The only way you'll get one of these, though, is if you pack your sorry self up and move on overseas -- or find a way to set up a pirate 1-SEG cell, anyway. It'll might just be worth it though, the whole mobile TV experience we saw on this tuner was pretty smooth, with near-instant channel changes and that slick guide, to boot.

PSP overtakes DS in Japanese hardware sales

Just in case you've been keeping one eye trained on the console wars out there, you might want to take note of the most recent sales figures from Japan. According to the latest stats, the PSP overtook the DS, Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, and PS2 in sales last week, propelled by the newest handheld installment of the Final Fantasy series, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Sure, it's happened before, but with the increasing competitiveness out there, this one seems extra important. The message should be clear to Nintendo -- don't rest on your laurels. Also, don't miss out on really hot Square Enix exclusives. The last thing you want is to go the way of Atari, and just end up as a simulation on a thriving system.

17,000 PSP Slims (PSP2000 / PSP Lite) Sold in First Week

(you can see my PSP Lite Review here, and a follow-up review here)
Sony has revealed that the recently launch PSP Slim & Lite has sold around 17,000 units on its first week of release in the UK.

The Slim & Lite launched on September 14 and was backed by radio and online advertising campaigns that have helped boost Sony's handheld sales in the run up to Christmas.

"The first week sales have come in at 17,000, so around a four fold increase on the previous week," said a spokesperson for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.

Earlier this month sales of the PSP were at an all time low according to Chart Track figures, but this was a result of Sony offloading the last of the original PSP stock before the introduction of the new model, said Sony.

"Of course we expected the previous weeks to be low as we moved the old stock through the channel in preparation for the Slim & Lite sku coming into retail, but now we are back on track and preparing for the launch of new products such as Go! Explore and Go Messenger."

Project Warmonger for PSP - Quake 3 Graphics on PSP ?

Nexus Studios have posted about their new homebrew game claiming it will have Quake 3 Graphics on PSP, heres the news from them:

Well it's about well over due for a new update for Project Warmonger for PSP. A lot has been going on in life so it's been hard to put something together properly. In today's update I'd thought I'd shed some light on some of the technology aspects of the game we're doing as well as some little news updates.

We are currently in the pre-production stage but are very close to starting full production. Right now we're working on getting most of the kinks out of our technology side of things. Something I can talk on right now is how the engine renders environments. Unfortunately right now I cannot give any media of our progress but I can say that some recent stress testing that we can render huge environments within the engine and keep a stable smooth 60 fps and we have not even done any proper optimization. Our goal in the end is to hit a stable 30 FPS considering we will have lots of action going on but we will try to hit above that mark.

If I we're to compare the environment that we testing to a current game I would probably say take the map "Blood Gulch" from the game Halo (a map everyone basically knows), now on its own Blood Gulch is a pretty large environment on its own but still manages to keep everything in sight, nothing really fades away due to short draw distance. What we're able to render is a map approximately 3 times the width and 2 times the height of Blood Gulch but still have everything in sight, meaning you can look at a structure at the other side of the map and not have it fade away or pop out. This is just the view distance, not even the actual size of the map; we can render maps much larger, you just won't be able to see that far, even still it's quite impressive!

Now you're probably wondering with rendering such large environments we must be taking a great hit on the other graphical sides of things. I can safely say that this is not the case, with these large areas we're still able to have super sharp textures that keep detail and don't lose detail and a reasonable poly count for models. Graphically we can pull of a quality very similar to Quake 3 arena which for a PSP game (let alone a homebrew game) looks darn good.

So that's what we can say right now, again what I'm saying is not final since things can change from when we start till we finish. We are soon ahead on starting full production, once we get the last hitches going out then we can start hopefully mid to end of September. We're still shooting for this year but we may have to delay, again not final but we want to make it as best as we can before releasing it.

We hope you enjoyed this; we're trying to now be more frequent on the updates since we have been quiet for a while.

TGS '07 Q&A: Sony's Phil Harrison

President of Sony Worldwide Studios talks up the new PSP, discusses the PS3 press furore, and ponders the future of the PlayStation brand.
TOKYO--On the fourth floor of Sony's Japanese offices in the posh district of Minato-ku, the PlayStation 3 maker held a party Wednesday night to show off 30 of the PS3's upcoming games to an audience of international journalists.

Phil Harrison, briefly not praising MotorStorm.

The company remained tight-lipped about what to expect in tomorrow's Sony Computer Entertainment keynote address, which starts at 10:30 a.m. Tokyo time on Thursday (2:30 a.m. BST Thursday, 6:30 p.m. PDT Wednesday). However, speculation is widespread that SCEI CEO Kaz Hirai will use his presentation to unveil a rumble-enabled Dual Shock 3 for the PS3, amongst other announcements.

At tonight's event, though, the atmosphere was informal. Informal enough, in fact, for GameSpot to corner Sony Worldwide Studios president and World's number one MotorStorm fan Phil Harrison over a cold drink. He politely discussed the constant comparisons of the PS3 and Wii, and how Sony plans to move on from the negative press the company has attracted over its latest console's bumpy ride at retail.

GameSpot UK: So can you talk to us about what's going to be announced during Kaz Hirai's keynote tomorrow?

Phil Harrison: No. And I wouldn't remember anyway. [Laughs.]

GS UK: We keep seeing stories from Japan about the Wii outselling the PlayStation 3 here 3-to-1 or 5-to-1 or whatever. Does that worry you?

PH: I'm not worried about it, no. Obviously I would like it to be the other way round, but it's not really fair to compare two products that serve different markets and are at different price points. So, it's not something that concerns me when you look around at a place like this and see the depth and quality of talent in games we've got coming through, so I'm pretty happy, actually.

GS UK: So you think it's unfair that people keep comparing the Wii and the PS3 when the Wii is so much cheaper?

PH: Yes. I don't know what the analogy is. If I make an analogy I'll probably make an unreasonable analogy, so I won't bother.

GS UK: Let's talk about the new PlayStation Portable. Why was this launched this summer?

PH: Constant improvement and innovation in design is what drives us, so why wouldn't we pass on to the gamer the advantages we can have in terms of making something smaller and lighter. In a handheld device, something that is smaller and lighter is a pretty highly regarded feature, and people seem to like it, so I think it's cool. Have you actually held one?

GS UK: Yes.

PH: People at E3 were going, "Is there anything in this? Is this just a mock-up or is this the final one?" Yep, it's the real one.

GS UK: Nintendo's strategy right now seems to be to widen the gaming audience and bring more widely appealing things to the market like educational games, and even non-game software. Any plans to do something similar?

PH: Since you are UK-based, you will know how influential games like EyeToy and SingStar and Buzz are, not just [to] the PlayStation 2 format, but growing the market generally cross-category. So, we're continuing to work on those for the PlayStation 2, we're bringing them all to PlayStation 3 in new, networked, innovative ways, which you saw at [the Leipzig] Games Convention with SingStar on the PlayStation 3 and Buzz! TV--which is going to be phenomenal with the ability of user-generated content for quizzes.

GS UK: I've been wondering about that. What if someone puts the wrong answer in?

PH: Then there will be a way to complain about that and rank it lower, which will then push it down in the recommendation engine to a lower ranking. It's all about the community. And I think there's going to be a button where you can actually challenge an answer.

GS UK: For the PS3, would you say it makes more sense to you to just focus on the hardcore gaming market?

PH: I think if you look back at the history of our platforms, they will all follow very similar trends where your initial audience is very different to the audience you have buying into the console seven, eight, or nine years later. So, we try to make software which is slightly ahead of that trend, software that enables younger users or new users to come in. I think what characterises PlayStation 3 is there's actually more variety and [a] more diverse genre mix that's available on the PS3 earlier in the life cycle than we saw on PS2 or PSone. So I think we're pushing into new areas more quickly than we've done before.

GS UK: Peripherals seem to be increasingly important. Have you guys got any plans to make any innovative new peripherals for the PS3?

PH: We have a research and development group that looks at new human interface designs as part of our core group, so there's a few interesting things that are lying around--literally--but there's a lot of innovation that doesn't ever make it to retail shelves, because of either creative or commercial or other considerations, so we'll continue to invest in that, and hopefully something along the lines of Buzz! or Eye Toy will come along. But I have nothing to share with you today.

GS UK: There seem to have been quite a lot of negative PS3 stories and criticism of Sony in general in the media. How do you intend to get past this?

PH: I think you're surrounded by the answer to that question, which is a tremendous lineup of really great games. We'll let the games do the talking.

GS UK: Thanks for your time, and enjoy the party.

PSP: Daedalus blog update - 19 September 2007 - Back Online

Source: StrmnNrmn's blog

People have been a little impatient and worried about the sudden absence of the infamous Daedalus PSP developer StrmnNmrn, but no reason to worry; the developer just updated his blog, explaining it. Here you have the full post:

Apologies for the lack of updates. I've not had internet access at home since moving flat at the end of August. My ADSL was activated today so I'm finally up and running again. I can't believe how long it's taken!

Between the flat move and a busy few weeks at work (getting ready for the Tokyo Game Show) I've not had that much time to work on Daedalus, but I have made some progress on a really cool feature people have been asking for for some time, namely savestate support.

For those not familiar with savestates, the basic premise is very much like 'hibernate' or sleep modes on PCs and laptops. A savestate can be created at any point during emulation. At a later time the savestate can be reloaded to restore the emulator to the exact state it was in when the savestate was created.

What's really useful about savestates is that they work even if the underlying save mechanism used by a rom isn't supported properly. I'm hoping that by adding savestate support Daedalus will become significantly more usable for many roms. Savestates also make development a lot easier as it means I can jump straight into the middle of a game when debugging/profiling rather than sitting through the title sequence dozens of times.

I still have a little bit of work left to do on the savestate system, mostly on the UI side, but there are a number of additional optimisations I want to finish off before I release R13. I'm currently planning to get everything ready for release on either the weekend of the 29th Sept, or possibly the first weekend in October.

Metal Chassis Omitted to Reduce Weight

(personally, the lack of Metal makes the PSP Slim feel very cheap. And man, that UMD door - CHEAP! -Auri)

Posted By: wraggster at PSP News

One way to reduce the weight of the old PSP has been admitted,

The most noticeable feature of the new Play Station Portable (PSP-2000), which was developed by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE), is its lightness. Its mass is 189 g, 91 g lighter than the old PSP (PSP-1000).

What is the factor that reduced weight of the PSP by 33%? The Nikkei Electronics Disassembly Squad started on taking apart the PSP-2000 with the help of engineers. We prepared a PSP-2000 and PSP-1000 to uncover the secret of the lightness by disassembling them concurrently.

PSP Motion: A motion sensor for the PSP (guess it's not plug 'n play homebrew)

Oh well, I was hoping :)

A company called NEO, mostly known for its DS and GBA flash carts and gadgetry in the homebrew/piracy scene, has made a motion sensor for PSP.

The tiny gadget (pictured) slots into the earphone jack of the PSP and enable the PSP, and draws power from the console itself. It allows the handheld to detect movement, likely using similar accelerometer tech to the Wii Remote.

It looks like a great little gadget but there's a catch: it doesn't work with any retail games. The device has been created as a tool for homebrew programmers to utilise in their bedroom programming creations. So it's great if you're running custom firmware and are into to homebrew scene, useless if you're not. It also won't work with the new slim PSP.

We can only hope that a developer takes notice and ceases the opportunity to produce a gadget like this for a more mainstream game.

Speculation over - the CFW Leak is Hurting Future Developments

Brakken posted on his Tehskeen Website about the harm to the PSP Scene that the recent souce leaks have done and the fact that Sony of all people have the source to the Custom Firmwares.,

Heres the news article in full from Brakken, post your comments after reading it:

Why is it not a good idea to screw with a group of Russian Hackers? Well, for one everyone including Eskimos receiving their Internet connection from Wifi routers mounted to polar bears will find out who you are and where you live. Another reason is the fact that stealing and releasing source code for a custom firmware that Sony doesn't want running on their hardware only helps them deterrent future releases.

Sure, there was a lot of speculation that the release wouldn't assist Sony in preventing the release of future versions, but this was only speculation and was and now is proven wrong. With the code in Sony's hands they have an arsenal to combat current and future firmwares. Look at it from this perspective - Sony has all of the information they need to combat this situation as they have the code, but Team M33 and others do not have Sony's own firmware code.

Sure, Sony could use skilled professionals to break down the custom firmwares from scratch, but now they do not need to spend a lot of money and resources in reverse engineering anything and have a heads up on PSP hackers. Unlike Sony, Team M33 and others have no way to know how their firmwares are going to be attacked - Sony could fill their original firmware with so many trap doors it could take weeks, if not months for various teams to get past them which will take valuable time away from improving their own firmwares.

I'm writing this article in response to a press release Team M33 published on their website that brings up some of these points and more.

"This intrusion into one of the basis of the actual PSP Scene, has just made harm to the entire world of the PSP Scene. Therefore, Sony saw this and made some interesting changes in some modules (mainly loadcore), plus the change of some nids that are used to the development of M33 Custom Firmware."

As stated, you can clearly see that the people who think the leak of the custom firmware was a good thing for the "scene" are not only moronic, but have little to no clue of what it takes to develop a firmware. The speculation was wrong. With the firmware source code in Sony's hands it's going the Sony PSP scene is suffering.

"This changes won't probably last too long and won't be an important problem, but it's just, as we have just said, another resultant of trying to be someone on this world by stealing and leaking instead of studying."

Of course, they are speaking of Mr. Serafin and the websites Maxconsole and PS3NEWS who assisted in the leak. Too bad the people who were involved in the leak trusted Maxconsole as a trustworthy place to conduct their business at.

"... result is this delay on the development of the new versions."

Again, there is proof Team M33 won't be releasing any new firmware versions any time soon due to the leak.

So in the end this turn of events goes to solidify my point that these so called "scene" sites are not helping developments, but are only feeding off of talented developers work to promote their money hungry agendas.

Plug 'n Play Homebrew?

If you have a PSP Classic (non-Slim model), you may be in luck... Neo has released the PSP Motion, which supposedly is plug 'n play homebrew. Plug it into your headphone jack and it works. I'm not sure about this yet, so I'm trying to order one and I'll post a review once I get it.

The sites I saw linking to it ... well, their link to the product no longer works. I wonder if Sony had the product yanked. Silly Sony.

Here's the specs... I'll post a link if I find a working link:

new neo item --- PSP motion kit released!

SPEC:
* Ultra small size
* Support ALL version of PSP
* not support psp slim
* support homebrew app & game
* open homebrew lib
* not need extra power supply
* plug and play

M33 on the state of custom firmware and Sony's relationship with homebrewers

M33 has a new post on their site RE custom firmware development and Sony's stance towards such developers...

Hello, world.

As you have seen, some things have changed between Sony and the developing of custom firmwares.

Due to the leak (that we've always gone against this crime) of the OE sources from a private svn, everyone can
take a peek into the patches done from the Open Edition to the original firmwares to allow the development
into this scene that was growing day after day. And, when we say anyone, we include Sony.

This intrusion into one of the basis of the actual PSP Scene, has just made harm to the entire world of the
PSP Scene. Therefore, Sony saw this and made some interesting changes in some modules (mainly loadcore), plus
the change of some nids that are used to the development of M33 Custom Firmware.

So, if you can't wait for the new release, you'll have to wait; and this is cause this leak and this changes
made upon the material we work and we try to release asap to the *entire* psp community. Looks like, as always,
there is someone that wants to be important in this world when no-one asks him, and his result is this delay
on the development of the new versions.

This "benefit" that much lammers talked about in foreign forums, talking about OE leak, will just made a result
in the near future: that serious developers (including us) will think twice before releasing anything else.

And also, speaking about the new "custom firmwares" that have been released, such as AoP, and others addons
that use M33Cf, will be deeply studied and reversered to see if *anything* of the core, reboot, or whatever
from our work has been ilegally used. If this is afirmative, we'll have to act against this.

This changes won't probably last too long and won't be an important problem, but it's just, as we have just said,
another resultant of trying to be someone on this world by stealing and leaking instead of studying.

Please have patient and stay tuned for the next Custom Firmware for PSP and PSP Slim and Lite :)

M33 Team.

UMD a waste of time and money, says Perry; also PSP Slim a "head in the sand" move

Illustration for UMD a waste of time and money, says Perry

The UMD is a dead format that's a waste of money, time, and investment according to David Perry.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, the Shiny founder and operator of GameConsultants.com revealed what he would do if he were in charge of PlayStation Portable development.

"They really need to restart the PSP programme in my book. They really need to bring out the PSP 3.0 and start again and try to get a lot of units out by reducing the manufacturing costs, by taking out all the motors and drives and stuff they have in there."

"That will make it even more sexy-looking, because it will be thinner again when they get all that junk out. Then, hopefully, the platform will actually get enough interest so that people will make a game specifically for it," Perry said.

He referred to the recent PSP Slim and Lite remodel as a "head in the sand" move.

As for what current PSP owners will do with their UMDs if Sony turns to a download-only handheld, Perry said that it would be fairly trivial to include software to validate that a user owns a certain game, much like iTunes. With authentication, users should be allowed to download digital versions of UMD games they already own.

When questioned as to why Sony hadn't already done this, Perry responded: "The truth is, the stores will not carry PSPs unless they feel they are going to get a piece of the action on the back end. And Sony has not come up with an innovative business model that can support that concept."

But with the industry moving in the direction of digital downloads, Sony needs to come up with a shared revenue system eventually.

"Maybe its an even slightly better deal because there is no cost of goods, and shipping, insurance, and warehousing is all out the window...so maybe the store gets a little bit more. And they get more of their shelf space back, which is their most valuable asset."

The complete interview with Dave Perry will be published tomorrow on GamesIndustry.biz.

Sony Selling Cell to Toshiba for $100B, but keeps management role...

So why don't they want to keep that magical processor that powers the PS3? Amazing processor. Incredible for scientific applications. Now they're going to sell it for PCs and computing clusters. But Sony doesn't know jack about marketing processors, which makes the "Sony as managers" clause very bothersome. -Auri

TOKYO (AP) - Sony Corp. will sell its Cell microprocessor and advanced chip operations to Toshiba Corp. for nearly 100 billion yen ($870 million) next year, a news report said Saturday.

Sony will effectively stop making advanced chips, and instead focus on audiovisual equipment, according to a report in Japan's largest business daily, the Nikkei.

The deal will likely include manufacturing lines for the Cell, the microprocessor Sony codeveloped with Toshiba and IBM Corp. for its PlayStation 3 game console, as well as image-processing chips for game consoles and camcorders, according to the report.

At the same time, Sony and Toshiba will establish a joint venture that will use these lines to manufacture system chips, the report said.

Although Toshiba will take a majority stake in the venture, Sony will be the principal buyer of the chips and will have a say in the company's management, the report said. Its game unit, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., could take a stake as well, it said.

The deal, expected in several months, will be worth nearly 100 billion yen, the report said.

Though Toshiba is Japan's largest chipmaker, raking in about 1.3 trillion yen ($11.3 billion) in sales in fiscal 2006 mainly through flash memory sales, it ranks third in advanced system chips, according to the Nikkei.

Through the planned purchase, Toshiba hopes to boost sales and catch up with foreign chip making rivals such as Intel Corp. and South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co., the report said.

Sony and Toshiba officials were not immediately available for comment.

Team Noobz release eLoader v1.00 - PSP Slim Homebrew Loader (w00t!)

ImageFrom Noobz:

As we promised a long time ago we have now finished a version of eLoader which can be run from a custom firmware and HEN.

I know that a lot will probably wonder what the use of this is now that we have Pandora out so that anyone can downgrade, well the main reason is the PSP-Lite. As a lot of people are finding out the PSP Lite is unable to run 1.50 kernel, this means that old homebrew games are not able to run on the PSP Lite custom firmware, however eLoader makes it possible to run some of these older games without needing to recompile them. So I hope all you new PSP Lite owners enjoy getting to see some of the old homebrew games running on the new device.

>> Download it here...

For further details on how to install and use eLoader v1.000 see readme.html in the ZIP file.

Additional notes for PSP 2000 Review Part 1

I left a couple things out of my initial notes:

  • The firmware that shipped with my PSP2000 was 3.60.
  • The display appears to have a SLOWER refresh rate than my other PSPs. There is a noticable shadow when scrolling or animation occurs. I haven't played a game yet, so I'll keep an eye out on how this affects gameplay.
  • The 1200 mAh battery reports about 5 hours and 37 minutes of usable battery life.
  • Is there a reason Sony has the "Enable Flash" option when it's on by default and there's no way to turn it off anyway?
  • The system does not come with a USB cable.

Best,

-Auri

PSP Slim (PSP2000) Review Part 1: Opening the Box and Initial Thoughts

Well, I overpaid my credit card, so hey, why not? Oh yeah, and I wrote Hacking the PSP. So I hopped on over to Fry's today and bought the PSP2000 Daxter pack. It actually comes with Daxter AND a Family Guy UMD, so that was cool. The outside packaging is much more svelte than the PSP Classic, as I am now calling the "old" PSP style. Below are my inital reactions and some photos. I had issues charging the battery with my PSP Battery Charger, so now I have to wait for the PSP2000 to charge itself, so more on gameplay and the like in a few days...
  • The unit only comes with a 1200 mAh battery. This is 25% less than the PSP Classic’s 1800 mAh battery.
  • The unit does NOT come with a case, at least not in the Daxter pack.
  • The PSP Classic and extended BATTERIES WILL FIT but the BATTERY COVER WILL NOT. If you have a collection of PSP batteries, don’t throw away your investment! FYI! FYI! It does not appear that Sony is selling extra PSP2000 batteries at retail, but that’s only based on my observation of none being sold at Fry’s. They may still be available, of course.
  • The PSP2000’s battery barely fits in the Sony PSP Battery Charger. It wasn’t fun getting it out, and it doesn’t appear as though the charger wants to charge it. It just flashed orange when attempting to charge the battery.
  • The above issue may not be a huge deal, since the PSP Classic batteries tend to “stick” in the battery well. But make sure your battery doesn’t fall out while playing...
  • The included Daxter and Family Guy UMDs don’t come in nice plastic cases. They come in cheap cardboard holders. You’ll want a UMD holder for this device. The Family Guy UMD is "The Freakin' Sweet Collection" and Daxter is one of the "PSP Greatest Hits" games. Retail for Family Guy is $17.99 and Daxter is $19.99.
  • The system really does feel lighter. I never thought 19% would be a huge difference, but yeah, the weight difference will be appreciated with extended gameplay.
  • The UMD drive is no longer spring loaded. You have to open the UMD door with your finger instead of using the cool spring. This is actually a good thing, because those UMD doors were annoying when they broke. The door opens at a much wider angle than the PSP Classic, so be careful that you don’t leave it open and let dust in.
  • The WLAN switch is now on the top. That’s nice ‘cause you won’t confuse it with the power switch anymore <grin>
  • The fit and finish feels much cheaper than the PSP Classic. The metal on the back around the PSP isn’t as nice looking, and the overall unit just feels like it is lower quality construction. Since the unit is mostly plastic instead of having the metal areas like PSP Classic, it may bug you if you liked the solid feel of the PSP Classic.
  • The Memory Stick Duo door is finally re-enforced. There are two flexible plastic connectors holding the door instead of the cheap door we had before.
  • My unit model number is PSP-2001.
  • The PSP2000 is manufactured in China. The PSP Classics I own were all made in Japan.
  • Make sure you have scissors. The PSP is in some hard plastic you'll have to cut through. Good ol' anti-theft.

Secrets of PSP Firmware 3.71

Freeplay one of the PSP Scenes best for hacking has decided to share all his investigations into the new PSP firmware 3.71, heres the full details:

Well, like I did way back with 2.80/2.81 and 3.30, I've dug through all the module files in firmware 3.71 to see what I could find.

Here's what I've found hidden in 3.71 so far. Take away from this whatever you want; hopefully it'll stir up some speculation and get people interested.

* An official screenshot plugin, which saves either JPEG or PNG images to ms0:/PSP/SCREENSHOT, named *_####.JPG or *_####.PNG
* Hints at an official web-based content service, possibly for buying music/videos
* An Xbox Live style network gaming service, including the browser useragent strings related to it (PS3Community-agent/1.0.0 and PSP NP/1.0), using an XML-based method of communicating with the central server

* When you stop viewing an image and return to the list, the image fades out instead of disappearing.

* Custom themes are saved to flash1:/vsh/theme/custom_theme.dat . The 3.71 fw comes with the 'cookies' theme preinstalled, saved as flash0:/vsh/resource/custom_theme.dat .

* The web browser reports the PSP's version as 3.70.

* Registering your PSP with a LocationFree base station makes a file called ms0:/MSSONY/LF/REGISTER/REGISTME.ERD (??? not confirmed, just a guess).

* The HTTP user agent for the LocationFree connection is "LFX HTTP Tunnel Client 1; model=LF-PSP, modeltype=6, generation=3, support=1/2/3, codec=0/2".

* The exact Flash version is "Shockwave Flash 6.0 r72".

* Licenses for DRM-enabled video will be stored as "/PSP/LICENSE/*.PNL", and the video *might* be stored as "ms0:/MPE_ROOT/100AEV01/*.MLV".

* There's a reference to "ms0:/MP_ROOT/105ANV01/MAQ00991.MP4' for ... some ... reason.

* The following game IDs listed in umdcache.prx, for whatever reason:
** UCAS-40025 (Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex - Territory of Hunter [Asia])
** UCES-00152 (Go! Sudoku [Europe])
** UCJS-10001 (Mina no Golf Portable [Japan])
** UCJS-10036 (Kazuo, a.k.a. Go! Sudoku [Japan])
** ULAS-42067 (Unknown [Asia])
** ULAS-42096 (UEFA Champions League 2006-2007 [Asia])
** ULES-00147 (Madden NFL '06 [Europe])

** ULES-00599 (Star Wars - Lethal Alliance [Europe])

** ULJS-00060 (Daito Giken Koushiki Pachi-Slot Simulator Yoshimune Portable [Japan])
** ULJS-00113 (Disgaea: Hour of Darkness Portable Tsuusin Taisen Hajimemasita [Japan])
** ULKS-46015 (Untold Legends - Brotherhood of the Blade [Korea])
** ULKS-46076 (Unknown [Korea])
** ULKS-46116 (DJ Max Portable 2 [Korea])

** ULUS-10217 (Capcom Puzzle World [USA])
** ULUS-10221 (UEFA Champions League 2006-2007 [USA])

* audio.prx refers to ULJS-00019 (School Rumble: Nesan Jiken Desu [Japan]) for... some reason
* isofs.prx refers to:
** ULES-00123 (Rengoku - The Tower of Purgatory [Europe])
** ULJM-05006 (Rengoku - The Tower of Purgatory [Japan])
** ULJM-05063 (SSX On Tour [Japan])
** ULJM-05127 (Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy in Itadaki Street Portable [Japan])
** ULUS-10013 (Rengoku - The Tower of Purgatory [USA])
** ULUS-10042 (SSX On Tour [USA])

* utility.prx pays special attention to all the different regional versions of Tekken 5 Dark Resurrection. It's been suggested that this is because of the way the game uses PSP-specific savedata.
* it also pays attention to:
** ULES00016 (Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower [Europe])
** ULJM05005 (Vampire Chronicle: The Chaos Tower [Japan])
** ULJM05026 (Star Soldier [Japan)
** ULUS10005 (Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower [USA])
** ULUS10021 (Midnight Club 3: Dub Edition [USA])

* Some interesting registry entries:
** /CONFIG/NETWORK/GO_MESSENGER

* References to files that don't exist, either because they're not made yet or because they're for the devkit only:
** flash0:/kd/npdrm_tool.prx
** flash0:/kd/usbserial.prx
** flash0:/kd/usbgps_serial.prx

* lfatfs.prx refers to flashfat4, flashfat5, lflash0:0,4 and lflash0:0,5. These devices don't exist on the slim; at least, I couldn't assign them as devices myself. Attempting to do so returns error 0x8001000D.

* loadexec_02g.prx refers to a new execution mode - 'umdemu', to go along with game, vsh, and updater.

* mpegbase_260.prx refers to ULJS00006 (Soukyuu no Fafner [Japan])

* np_auth.prx refers to all sorts of weird stuff, like:
** the words "Lediatio Lunto Ritna"
** something called X-I-5, with a version of 2.1, which appears to be related to submitting 'tickets' to https://auth.??.ac.playstation.ne t/nav/auth; probably related to logging onto the network play service

* the pops plugin uses a PS1 BIOS called 'System ROM Version 4.5 05/25/00 J', which is apparently the same as the 3.70 one (as indicated by the partial SVN path 'branches/pops-370/src(r5808)' in pops.prx)

* both umdman.prx and umdcache.prx contain the entire UMD_DATA.BIN file from ULJS-00001 (Ridge Racers [Japan])

* content_browser.prx appears to be some sort of convoluted multifunction plugin... I've found references to widgets/MusicAlarmTime.cpp which implies some sort of musical alarm clock, but also to what appears to be a music player (maybe) including a list of compatible formats:
** msgmusic_info_codec_atrac 3
** msgmusic_info_codec_wav_l inearpcm
** msgmusic_info_codec_1.4m
** msgmusic_info_codec_mp3
** msgmusic_info_codec_aac
** msgmusic_info_codec_wma
** msgmusic_info_codec_unkno wn
** msgmusic_info_codec_atrac 3plus
** msgmusic_info_codec_5.1ch
** msgmusic_info_codec_3m
** msgmusic_info_codec_4.6m
** msgmusic_info_codec_wav_a dpcm

* references to /PSP/APP, which is also created when you run the 1SEG player (downloadable apps, anyone?)

* references to /MSSSJ/GUIDE and /MSSSJ/PE ... whatever they are

* as before, references to /PSP/MINIGAME

* new registry categories:
** /CONFIG/NP, containing keys named account_id, login_id, and password
** /NETWORK/GO_MESSENGER ... containing unknown keys

There's probably a lot more that I've overlooked, but this is the stuff that caught my attention.

Free PSP *and* PS3 with any Sony HDTV Purchase

(well, there's plenty of margin in those TVs... -Auri)

Apparently, Sony is offering a pretty sweet deal overseas, in Sweden at the very least. Anyone who purchases a full-HD TV from Sony, will get either a free Playstation 3 unit or a 200EU rebate on the TV. On top of that, with every HD Ready TV purchased, buyers will receive a free Sony PSP. NO word on if this deal is coming to the US, or what model PS3 or PSP is being given away. This should boost the PS3 numbers a ton, though. Click the link for the original advertisment image. Comment and let us know if there is more to translate!

Update: The ad says the deal runs from October 1 to November 31, 2007, so start saving up!

Includes all features in previous OE and M33 Firmwares
New Recovery Menu
Use XMBs , gameboots, fonts, etc. without flashing (memory stick required)
And more to come!

First Pics Of Simpsons, Spider-Man PSPs

yelowred.jpg
Back at Leipzig, SCEE announced that to coincide with the PSP Slim's launch in Europe they'd be releasing two limited edition variants of the handheld. One, a Simpsons PSP, would be yellow and come bundled with the new Simpsons PSP game. The other, a Spider-Man bundle, would include both Spider-Man 2 (the PSP game) and Spider-Man 3 (on Blu-Ray). Anyways, at launch there were no pictures of either model. Here, then, are the first pictures of both.

Sony Releases Firmware 3.71

Must be a good reason - probably "security updates"... Geez, can't they just release one firmware version every few months instead of every week? Or test their hardware + software more thoroughly before shipping...

From Sony's site:

An update to the PSP system software was made available on September 13, 2007. With this update, the system software is version 3.71. Features updated in system software update 3.71 include

Security

  • A correction has been made to the settings for some regions.

Note:

  • This system software update includes all features contained in previous versions.
  • The new system software will preserve any settings previously made to the PSP (such as the Parental Control level).
  • Depending on the software title, you may not be able to play without first updating the PSP system software.
  • Do not perform updates using any data other than the official update data provided by Sony Computer Entertainment over a network or on disc media, and do not perform updates by methods other than those described in the product documentation or in this site. If an update is performed using data from another source, by another method, or with a PSP system that has been altered or modified in any way, the PSP system may not operate properly and may not be able to install the official update data. Any of these actions may void the PSP system warranty and affect your ability to obtain warranty services and repair services from Sony Computer Entertainment.

Custom Themes ARE Possible on Slim 3.60 M33

hurtween has found a way of applying custom themes on firmware 3.60 M33 on PSP Slim. Here is the full post (slightly modified):

Custom themes ARE possible on PSP Slim with 3.60 M33, and it's easy...

Notice the TV icon, and Connected Display Settings icon, which I have yet to recolour, and also the firmware version.

Now we just need 1.50 brew to work...

EDIT: This is not a fake! All you need to get this working yourself, are the same tools that have already been provided by the community.

YOU WILL NEED

- A PSP capable of running 1.50 homebrew
- Your Slim PSP
- RCO Editor 14d
- Resurssiklunssi v0.3
- CXMB v2.4

...Seriously, all you need to do is load up CXMB through seplugins.
But for it to work without crashing, you will need converted 3.60 rco's.

1. Access your Slims's Flash0.
(If you can only see 3 folders in there you will need to unhide system operating files from the view tab.)
go to f0:/vsh/resource, locate all the rco's and save them to your desktop.

2. Put all the RCO's that you want to change into the RCO folder in the root of your memory stick and convert them using Resurssiklunssi
You will need a sysmem.prx from 2.70 f.w. and a 1.50 homebrew capable PSP to use this tool.

Quoted from Resurssiklunssi Readme "Get DECRYPTED and UNCOMPRESSED SYSMEM.PRX from 2.70... ...firmware and place it to the rco-folder.
Use psardumper/prxdecrypter to obtain that file." Also make sure there is a 'done' folder in the rco folder or the program will not work.

- 2.70 EBOOT
- PSP Brew
- PSAR Dumper
- PRX Decrypter

3. Once they are converted all you need to do is open them with RCO Editor and insert the graphics. You now have Slim PSP compatable RCO's.

4. You cannot flash these files because Sony have added some kind of protection which makes putting resource files on Flash0 not work like it used to.

5. Just save your resource files to ms0:/CXMB/vsh/resource on your memory stick and enable the plugin through the recovery menu.

NOTE: you cannot load prx's yet, untill they get decrypted, and custom fonts will crash the browser.
You can however load the reboot_plugin.prx, and the eboot_launcher_plugin.prx out of the CXMB/vsh/module folder.
Just make sure to name them to the corrosponding icon you want them to launch from.

..Still amazing that this plugin works properly on the Slim.

I hope you all enjoy.
Credit to Poison for making this awesome plugin!

Sony Ericsson eyes PlayStation brand

Sony Ericsson is considering tapping into Sony's Play-Station and Bravia television brands to create new ranges of high-end handsets.

"Its an area of possible future activity," said Miles Flint, president of the Swedish-Japanese handset market.

The company, which is50 per cent owned by Sony, is already producing a Bravia-branded handset with mobile television capability in Japan, with operator NTT DoCoMo.

A PlayStation phone was also a possibility, said Mr Flint, although he stressed the technology behind such a device was still some way from being perfected.

"We need to make sure that it is a credible phone, and be sure we are justified in putting that identity on it," said Mr Flint, who will step down as president in November.

Sony Ericsson has successfully used Sony's Walkman music brand and CyberShot camera brand to create handsets, favoured by young, aspirational consumers.

The strategy has helped the company more than double margins in the last three years, going from number five to number four in terms of global market share of handsets.

It is under pressure to update its portfolio in the face of new products from Appleand Nokia.
