Full coverage of Sony's E3 Press Conference from DCEmu...

Wow, I have to congratulate these guys on some great reporting ... realtime and few typos! Great job guys!

Read the entire thread here...

Here's an excerpt:

Still waiting in line. We are still making our way over, stay tuned ...

4:36 - The line is moving. According to Euro Gamer, Hideo Kojima is "stuck in the queue." Should have something for ya soon ...

4:42 - We are sitting down, getting ready to go.

4:49 - Everyone's still filing in to Stage 15 on the Sony backlot. Everyone's expectant and the mood is generally upbeat. The house lights are on full, so it'll still be a few minutes before anything official starts. In the background, Sony's been playing some hardcore gangsta rap: we note this because Nintendo would never, ever play that music. The rap song (which we failed to identify) was followed by Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean." The music is eclectic, we're hoping the games line up is similarly so.

4:52 - Sony's only playing the music out of a few front speakers. it fills the cavernous stage, but we know that once the actual presentation starts they'll switch on the hidden speakers and crank the bass to 11 for chest-thumping, hair-raising 5.1 sound that'll move this audience whether they want to be moved or not. Lights have been dimmed! As predicted, the music's been taken from 5 to 7.

4:54 - First up on stage, Kaz Hirai. President & CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America. "Please accept my apologies for the delay in getting started this afternoon. Just one year ago we unveiled plans for PS3. PS3 is not an incremental upgrade. PS3 is a very powerful machine ... In essence the real power rests in the hands of the content consumer. We want freedom. We want choice. We wanted to be entertained in new and unique ways."

4:55 - Kaz looks so darn tiny down there on the stage. We're up here in nosebleed territory. "Seemless interats with PlayStation family with products. PS3 is the best of breed of computer entertainment platform ... It requires hunge finicial investments. But we must take risks to reap rewards. The essence of P{S3 is real change and comsumers are ready. The next generation deosn't start until we say its time."

4:57 - Did Kaz just say that PlayStation 3 is the "best of breed" computer entertainment platform? Will gamers really react to businessy terms? Well, no matter, they're just tossing out buzzwords to see which ones will stick to the wall. "We would not be able to achive greetness without a strong foundation. PS2 install base continues to grow worldwide ... Global total of 103.69 million units." Kaz's presentation is typical: we're covering all of the PlayStation 2 performance records: 23.3 million hardware shipped in Japan/Asia. North amercia 42m. europe 38.6m units. Total 103.7 units. additional 10m units to be shipped.

4:59 - "We have ammassed more than 3 million registered [online] users ... We want to remind everyone that PS2 will continue to make significant contributions. We have an amazing linuep of titles." Lists ATV Offroad Fury 4, Destroy All Human 2, Dirge of Cerberus, Dragon Ball Z, Final Fantasy XII, etc.

Control your Xbox with your PSP or DS

Feel like controlling your XBox with your PSP/DS for no apparent reason? Then maybe this is for you. Tony Morelli of WagonButterworth.com has "made" (I use the term loosely) an Xbox controller that allows virtually any device that can 'talk UDP' to control an Xbox; which includes both the PSP and DS.

This isn't fancy stuff. The XBox Controller is actually being used by by wire arms that are controlled by a 'Basic Stamp 2'. The BS2 is controlled by a gumstix over a serial port. The gumstix talks udp and accepts commands. So if you want to control an xbox, you basically have to talk a simple udp protocol to the gumstix. Sound confusing? Thats just the start of it. Here's how the PSP/NDS fit into the picture:

"The controller (in this case the psp or nds) polls inputs every so often and then dumps the state. I had it all working at every 100ms, but then something happened - not sure what - so I backed it down to every 250ms. The bottle neck is on the BS2, and to keep things consistant, I just kept all polling intervals the same.

The app on the gumstix consists of 2 threads. One listens for udp commands and the other babbles out the serial port at 38.4k. The serial thread wakes up every 250 ms and sends the status of all buttons to the BS2. The status is stored in global variables that are updated by the udp thread whenever the controller sends an update."

If you feel the need, Tony Morelli has compiled everything you need to create your own Xbox controller controller using your PSP or DS, including a hardware diagram. If you understood all of the above, check it out. If you got lost at the first sentence like me, you can always look at the pictures!

Conversation in a Killzone: Interview with Guerilla Games Director

Killzone: Liberation is one of the most anticipated PSP titles to be showcased at this week's E3 in Los Angeles. In an interview with the Games director of Guerilla, Mathjis De Jonge answers some of the questions regarding this third-person shooter for the PSP.

The first Killzone: Liberation title was made for the PS2 and was a first-person shooter. Although this version for the PSP is based on its predecessor, De Jonge says this is very different from the PS2 version, including the story.

Killzone: LiberationKillzone: LiberationKillzone: Liberation

De Jonge: Killzone Liberation is an action-packed tactical shooter that has been developed from the ground-up specifically for PSP. The game's story continues 2 months after the end of the original Killzone for PS2. The fleet has arrived but the Helghast troops, led by General Metrac, are still gaining ground in the southern provinces and Captain Templar is sent there to stop Metrac.

De Jonge also notes that the change from a first-person POV to a third-person POV was necessary as it would give players the best view of the action and of the entire Killzone world. The intelligent camera system would give gamers a new viewpoint that would provide them with “with many interesting options such as a more tactical overview, more graphical details and nice parallax effects.”

The development team also made sure that Killzone: Liberation's players would not experience the same issues the PS2 version had like the repetitive speech and sloppy death animations. Weapons, visual style, storyline and enemy types were also improved. New weapons were added to the PSP game such as a crossbow with explosive tips, a flame-thrower, a rocket-launcher and remote detonated mines. Some weapons can be driven simultaneously by two players to crush obstacles.

The Tactical Command System in the game is also one great attraction for gamers.

Killzone: LiberationKillzone: LiberationKillzone: Liberation

The new third person camera provides the player with a good overview of the battlefield and allows them to play the game tactical. But the really cool new feature is the ability to command a buddy in some of the missions using the Tactical Command System. New enemies and encounters have been designed so that the player is encouraged to make good use of the TCS. We still leave it up to the player how he prefers to play the game, some people like to plan their actions while others simply rush in, the buddies are programmed to assist in both situations.

Games Director Mathjis De Jonge believes that gamers will enjoy Killzone: Liberation for the PSP because of the multiplayer mode with up to six players via Ad Hoc, new weapons and gadgets, and the game's mobile-friendly feature (“the game is divided in chunks of 15 minutes and... is designed to be played in quick short bursts").

Mercury game relaunched at cheaper price

Mercury, also known as Archer McLean's Mercury, has been relaunched by publishers Ignition Entertainment, at the cheaper price of $19.99 (RRP). Never heard of Mercury? Here's what it's all about:

Mercury is a challenging puzzle game that puts you in control of ultra-realistic liquid mercury ‘blob’. The trick is to effectively guide the mercury blob around traps, door switches, spikes, zapping electrical fields, moving floors and other hazardous elements, rolling your way through 72 levels spread over six challenging worlds. Blob control is important! Keep your liquid mercury intact is the key to completing your goal as well as identifying the colors you need to win the game.

This relaunch at a cheaper price could be related to the hype of Ignition Entertainment's upcoming release, Mercury Meltdown. A relaunch at $19.99 reminds me of the platinum series of PS2 games. Maybe other game publishers will take note, and do the same with some of their outdated titles. We could even see a fully-fledged PSP platinum games series soon!

Square Enix Pre-E3 Press Conference Summary

The Square Enix Pre-E3 Press Conference just ended and a flurry of information has come in. There have been titles shown for the DS, GBA, PSP, PS2, Wii, and PS3. That's right. Wii and PS3.

The conference started out by showing the titles we'd heard of already. Trailers for Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy VI, Rocket Slime, Dawn of Mana, and the mobile games. After a small speech by Square-Enix President Yoichi Wada, the other games started coming out.

The first up was Final Fantasy XII, already released in Japan. The release date for the game was announced, October in North America, before a flurry of mobile game announcements. Dirge of Cerebus: Lost Episodes is coming out for mobile systems. Obviously Square Enix is going right into the mobile market.

Now the PS2 stuff. A very long trailer for Final Fantasy XII was shown. Fully English. The new voice actors are wonderful - you aren't going to be seeing a Resident Evil type cheesefest here. No laughing scene either. Even more trailers were shown after that for games like Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. All the trailers should be hitting the world wide web in a matter of minutes.

A trailer of the fully 3D mobile game Dirge of Cerebus: Lost Episodes is shown before a trailer for Final Fantasy III. As they say, "the only Final Fantasy never to reach Western shores." After that? Final Fantasy V and VI trailers for the GBA.

The World of Mana series was the next to be shown off with a trailer for both Children of Mana and Dawn of Mana. Children of Mana has already been released in Japan, but Dawn of Mana which takes 10 years before it has not.

Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime is announced before Shinji Hashimoto talks about the success of the FFVII line of games. He then announces that Dirge of Cerebus would be out in North America on August 22nd before showing trailers of FFVII stuff we've seen already.

Now, for our PSP fanbase, the first FFVII Crisis Core footage is shown. Loads of Sephiroth and Zack footage. No gameplay is shown, only cutscenes in real time. It'll be up to download ASAP.

The last three game announcements are the biggest announcements of the show. First up is huge. Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors is coming out for the Wii. Not only that, it'll be a launch title! No actual footage is shown. You will be able to use your controller as a sword. This is the first Dragon Quest title on a Nintendo home console in over a decade. This alone assures that the Wii will succeed in Japan.

Next up is Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. One for Wii, another for DS. The game looks absolutely amazing. Might have been CG, but if it's real time it's absolutely breathtaking. Definitely up to Square Enix standards. It's being codenamed Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers. The DS version is named Ring of Fates at the moment. The video showed four players simultaneously. Both games are WiFi compatible.

They've saved another biggie for last. Rounding out the next-gen trio is Final Fantasy XIII. Not just Final Fantasy XIII. Three titles sharing that name. Final Fantasy XIII for PS3. Final Fantasy Versus XIII for PS3. Final Fantasy Agito XIII for Mobile.

A heroine is shown in the trailer for FFXIII with a sword and gun going through a futuristic world. The director will be Motomu Toriyama. FFXIII Versus, an action-focused game, will be directed by the people who made Kingdom Hearts and FFVII: Advent Children. FFXIII Agito will feature adhoc multiplayer.
