Homebrew: New PSP Homebrew Releases for April 8, 2006

This has been an odd weekend. From there being no line at practically any restaurant I went to, to open seats at a bar on a Friday night, to almost no new homebrew on a Saturday... I guess everyone's working on their taxes (at least in the U.S.) :-P

Applications
PSP FTPD - FTP client for your PSP, updated!
PSPRadio Pre-release v0.38.091 Static (2.0) - Shoutcast client for Firmware 2.00 PSPs. There is a version for firmware 1.50, but it was updated a couple days ago. Get the 1.50 version here. There's also a cool new skin (theme) for the app here.

First Impressions - Def Jam: The Takeover

IGN has posted a ton of screens and some info about the game Def Jam:

Representatives from Electronic Arts paid a visit to the IGN offices this afternoon and brought an alpha build of Def Jam: Fight for NY - The Takeover right along with them. Though the version in-hand was over a month old (EA is keeping the newer versions under wraps until a later date), we did get to see a number of the PSP-exclusive additions already.

The most obvious of these new features is the implementation of ground grapples and a tightening of the stagger animations. More specifically, in the original console version only strikes and a few specialty maneuvers could be pulled off while an opponent was on the floor. Now, both the guy on his back and the assailant standing over him can go into full horizontal grappling -- complete with reversals, escapes, and the same old strike maneuvers that were used before.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest trailer for the PSP

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is an action adventure game based on the movie, Pirates of the Caribbean. A trailer has been released for the game that will span across the portable formats, being developed for PSP, DS, and GBA.

The PSP game features extremely eccentric Captain Jack Sparrow, the dashing Will Turner, and the feisty Elizabeth Swann as they search the legendary (are there any other kind?) treasure, the Dead Man's Chest, through 10 stages. The PSP version of the game also has a four player ad-hoc multiplayer mode, which is sure to bring in the gold. “This completely different "ship-versus-ship" mini-game bears a striking resemblance to Sid Meier's Pirates but with even more stuff to play with. Ten different maps, customizable ships, and the option to invade your foes ships with crewmates sounds like a lot of fun to us, and it sure plays like it too.” - IGN

The short trailer shows in-game footage of Captain Jack Sparrow swinging, jumping, climbing, and sword-fighting his way through an island jungle.

Download the trailer here.

Price: $39.99

Rating: E (Everyone)

Nothing like a temperamental king and his inability to keep his ego in check.

In the newest release from the surprise-hit Katamari franchise, Me and My Katamari, the King of All Cosmos had a little too much fun on a recent vacation and has destroyed an entire series of islands. He must now make some new islands for the deposed residents.

He assigns this chore to the Prince -- the gamer -- who will get help from his katamari. If you are new to the franchise, the katamari's purpose is to roll over items -- anything, really -- from chairs and tables to trees or whatever else you can collect.

Interview with the creator of Grand Turismo! (cool!)

Today at the official PlayStation store in San Francisco, Sony held a launch event for its motorcycle racing game Tourist Trophy, with activities ranging from a tournament to an autograph signing with head of developer Polyphony Digital -- and now also Sony Computer Entertainment executive -- Kazunori Yamauchi. Just before this signing, we had a chance to pull Yamauchi aside and ask a few questions.

Interview with Kazunori Yamauchi

1UP: Since Sony has restructured its various divisions, your job has changed. How does your day to day job differ from what it used to be when you were just in charge of Polyphony?

Kazunori Yamauchi: The change may not be huge, but there is in fact a change to my day to day activities. Previously, I was 100% in charge of Polyphony and that was all I had to worry about, but currently maybe 30% of my day to day activities represent SCE corporate or overall PlayStation business planning or strategies -- things like that.

1UP: How would you compare your role on Tourist Trophy to your role on Gran Turismo 4?

KY: On GT4, I was pretty much all hands on, all the way down to every little detail including fixing the fraction times for license tests, to the furthest digit for the license times, making those adjustments, finding the right game balance. In terms of Tourist Trophy, we do have a director in-house who looked after this title, [Takamasa] Shichisawa a.k.a. Nana. He was looking after most of the overall gameplay. I supported Tourist Trophy with the technical portion and of course from the management level.

More Capcom Classics Coming To PSP

knights_of_the_round.gifThank you, Capcom, for bringing more old school arcade goodness to the PSP. Now, if you could just start charging less than $40 for me to get my hands on these collections, that’d be great. Yeah.

Sorry, on to the good news. Capcom has even more classic gaming coming to UMDs this year. Following up their Capcom Classics Collection Remixed anthology, comes Capcom Classics Collection Reloaded. Featuring Street Fighter II, Ghouls’n Ghosts, and Commando, as well as a few unknown titles also culled from the PS2 and Xbox CCC releases, they’re also adding the more obscure Eco Fighters, King of Dragons, and Knights of the Round to the list. Make sure you guys don’t forget about Warriors of Fate! I wanna get my meat bun snackin’ action on the go.

Full PR after the jump.
