Portable Software to Soar?

Video Game Journal's clairvoyant analysts Jason Fraft and Chris Kwak have pulled out their runes, tea leaves, and crystal balls and made some predictions as to what some game publishers can expect to rake in over the next 4 years. According to the future-telling skills of Fraft and Kwak, "portable software revenue could grow over 140%".

Some of this is thanks to the prominence of the PSP and DS on the market, and the fact that these games (especially on the PSP side) are so darned expensive. All is not peachy for the PSP though, "PSP sales could take a hit when PS3 and Nintendo Revolution launch. Sony will need to make PSP an extension of the PS2/PS3; otherwise, the PSP will be another console-like device and Sony risks cannibalizing PSP with the PS3."

The PS3 might want to have some Tums on hand for that meal...

GUBA Launches Free Video Upload Service

All you iPod and PSP owners now have another way to upload video and share it with others. And it's free! Macworld reports that GUBA is expanding its offerings by starting a free video upload and sharing service that automatically transcodes into different formats, including iPod and Sony PSP.

The new service lets content creators upload short films, video clips and home movies, all hosted on GUBA servers. Those videos are then available to GUBA subscribers and non-subscribers for no cost. At first, the service will be limited to 200MB uploads, but that will grow to 1GB by April, according to the company.

GUBA Upload embeds content with information you provide, including name, tags, categories and date. An individual URL is provided so you can share uploads with friends and family. GUBA restricts uploads to user-generated content; the service will not allow users to index feature-length films, for example.

GUBA users who want to download the content can subscribe via Really Simple Syndication (RSS), and the service handles on-the-fly transcoding to ready the content for playback through iTunes, on an iPod, Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP), or in instant playback on the Web browser using Flash video.

PSP: YEAR ONE - A Report in the Chicago Tribune

Published March 21, 2006

I love my Sony PlayStation Portable, which turns 1 year old on Friday. It boasts more than 100 games ($20 to $40 each) that get better all the time (Must-haves include new releases "Daxter," "Syphon Philter: Dark Mirror" and the still-good "Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories). It has about 350 movies and TV shows ("Chappelle's Show: Season 1" makes bus rides bearable). And it stores music and photos, as well as surfs the Web via your home wireless network (psp.connect.com has details) or Wi- Fi hot spots (JiWire.com will find one near you).

Sony has sold more than 15 million PSPs worldwide, and now you can buy one for $199.99. A lot of great accessories are available such as Datel's 4 gigabyte hard drive/battery pack makes your PSP bulkier but holds so much stuff ($250; datel.co.uk); Pinnacle's Studio Version 10.5 helps you edit your home movies and store them on a PSP Memory Stick ($49.99 with limited-time $20 mail-in rebate; pinnaclesys.com).
