Gamepark announces redesigned XGP and surprise XGP Mini

Not *exactly* PSP related, but cool nonetheless...

From Engadget:

Since the open-source GP2X handheld gaming console has earned itself quite a devoted little following, we're sure that several of you will be excited to learn that Gamepark (but not Gamepark Holdings, who had split off to release the GP2X) has released photos of two upcoming models that may or may not pack the same PMP and emulation goodness -- these may be geared towards the commercial market -- into slightly different packages. First is the the redesigned XGP (Extreme Game Player) handheld, which ditches the swivel screen design that we once opined "looks a bit like the *** child of a PSP and a Sidekick," for a more traditional Game Gear / Lynx / Nomad-type form factor, while one-upping the GP2X in screen size (4-inches vs. 3.5), the addition of a DMB TV receiver, and a little standard known as WiFi. The real surprise, though,  was the XGP Mini, an obvious rip-off of homage to the Game Boy Micro, which like the GP2X and XGP, sports an SD slot and 64MB NAND memory, but 32MB less RAM than the 64MB found in its brethren. Although release dates are unknown for either model, the XGP will supposedly retail for around $300, while the XGP Mini (pictured after the break) will cost $150.

[Thanks, Craig]

Fake Halo jumping onto the PSP

Click to ZoomWell, not exactly. Of course Microsoft wouldn't give up its flagship Xbox franchise over to the despised Sony, but that didn’t prevent a homebrewer from dreaming up a version of Halo to be played on the PlayStation Portable (PSP). Going by the username of PSPdemon, this enthusiastic gamer took the popular multiplayer app Iris and shoved in everyone's favourite alien killer in a green suit.

Based on the screenshot, it doesn't look particularly interesting. There are crates. Crates as far as the eye can see. Crates that can contain health packs, ammo, new weaponry, and maybe even the fountain of youth, who knows. What we do know is that this version of Halo is a relatively simple four-player deathmatch with Master Chief as the primary character.

Oh, the beauties of the internet. Only on the internet will you be able to find fighting games that contain both Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter characters, extensions of the Mario franchise where he meets up with Sonic, and now, Halo on a Sony console… sort of.

Stream your iTunes to your PSP

Here’s an interesting little program that Albert emailed us about earlier today. One of the best selling points of 2.60 Firmware is the ability to stream RSS feeds to your PSP via your WiFi connection. Now that feature is even more useful with the iTunes RSS Server which will allow you to stream MP3 and AAC music to your PSP from your PC. To install, simply download the appropriate file, run the iTunes RSS Server, set your PSP to connect to http://{Your PC's IP}:8080 and subscribe to the RSS feed. Here’s the complete feature list for this feed streaming application:

  • Run as a web server, accepting port 8080 requests (configurable per --port option)
  • Publish RSS 2.0 feeds with rss:enclosure that PSP/iTunes can subscribe (PSP firmware 2.60 required)
  • Run both on Windows XP and Mac OSX
  • Support smart playlist
  • Support on-demand reloading of Music Library (you don't have to restart the server when you update iTunes library)
  • Publish playlists with MP3/AAC/MP4 files (including Video)
o Automatically exclude Video and DRMed AAC files for requests from PSP
  • Extract album artwork and embed as rss:image
  • Serve media files streaming per byte-range requests (PSP RSSchannel requires)
  • Support htpasswd based HTTP Basic Authenticatoin (--passwd /path/to/.htpasswd)

Download: [iTunes RSS Server for Windows]
Download: [iTunes RSS Server for Mac OSX] (Requires recent PERL and CPAN modules)

McZonk Working on More Good Stuff

Well, McZonk's finished with his exams (good luck! :)), and now he's back to coding on the PSP! Next up appears to be updates to Quake 2 for PSP and ports of Commander Keen!

From his blog:

Finally I have written all my exams and it is time to have some fun with coding again. I will work on Quake 2 PSP and hope to make some improvements soon.
I nearly have finished the next Keen version with Load and Save support and some other fixes. I'll not make a port of Keen 4, 5 or 6. The engine is complete different and I'm not a big fan of the second triology.
I also have two other psp apps I'm working on. So stay tuned.

I will make some more stuff together with Titan. Some psp demos and other stuff is waiting for me.
I have exchanged my black psp with a white one and my little brother has built a PSP Lego Dock for me. I love it.
