Bus Driver Gets Fired for Playing PSP While Driving

A BUS driver has been fired for playing computer game Grand Theft Auto — while at the WHEEL.

Steve Allcock was reported by terrified passengers who heard the screams of characters being butchered as he drove between stops.

Bosses fired him after on-board CCTV footage showed he had the handheld device on his knees.

One passenger said: “He was playing on a Sony PlayStation PSP not only at bus stops but at traffic lights and sometimes while driving. The music and sound effects could be heard throughout the bus.

“I find it hard to believe anyone in charge of a bus capable of carrying 50 people would be safe driving with a PSP on their knees.”

Steve used the console, like the one with Grand Theft Auto on, as he drove his single-decker from Accrington to Blackburn, Lancs.

His boss at Blackburn Transport, Michael Morton, said: “The driver was interviewed and we feel we’ve taken appropriate disciplinary action.

“We take a very dim view of drivers using any sort of device that will distract them. Our ultimate concern is the safety of passengers.”

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents said: “It is horrifying. If something went wrong how would the driver react quickly?”

Steve’s sacking comes days after Donna Maddock, 22, of Buckley, Flint, was fined for applying make-up while driving.

Review: Lemmings for PSP

Overall Rating: 3.5 / 5

The hapless lemmings have foolishly marched off cliffs since 1990, with more than 5 million games sold and countless critters meeting their demise.Disastrous 3D versions appeared to have buried the series forever, but Sony has resurrected the green-haired critters for this welcome PSP game.

After being dropped onto the screen one by one, your dim but worthy mates will follow the leader until inevitably falling to their doom. The player's task is to quickly assign jobs such as blocking, digging and climbing to successfully guide as many lemmings as possible to the exit.

Transforming a lemming into a floater enables them to use an umbrella for a safe landing, while bombers can blow up obstacles, bashers can dig horizontally and builders construct walkways.

Recognising the 15-year-old original offered the most engaging and satisfying puzzles, this version borrows many classic stages as well as introducing new challenges. There are more than 150 levels set in a variety of environments, including deserts, dungeons and sewers, all viewed using the traditional two-dimensional perspective.

Players might miss the traditional mouse-based control, but assigning tasks and exploring levels is simple, particularly with the handy zoom. Purists might cringe at the pause option, which allows players to assess the levels and even assign lemming abilities at leisure without fear of them bumbling into trouble; it certainly helps with pinpointing specific creatures in a chaotic herd.

Some of the new levels are fiendishly tricky, for example, orchestrating mid-air explosions to remove nearby obstacles requires planning and precise timing. Fortunately, few solutions rely on luck and players can tackle a different level if truly stuck.

Players can create their own stages to swap with friends. The level editing tool is a little unwieldy, but PSP's wireless capabilities should ensure its success.

Endgame: Jaded gamers might scoff at the price tag (almost $80 Australian), but this is an enthusiastic resurrection that will keep Lemmings newcomers glued to the screen.

Review: Me and My Katamari for PSP

Though a few technical concessions have been made to fit the game onto a PSP, the charm of the series still shines brightly.

Overall Score: 8
Gameplay: 8
Graphics: 8
Sound: 8
Value: 6
Tilt: 9

The Good: The king of all cosmos; translates dual-analog control to the psp well; fun and eclectic soundtrack; unique, psychedelic visual style.
The Bad: Interrupts levels with load times; limited number of levels; many songs recycled from previous katamari games.

The King of All Cosmos, that epic personification of eccentric, intergalactic royalty, brings his uniquely articulate brand of white-hot crazy to the PSP with Me and My Katamari. As a portable interpolation of Katamari Damacy, Me and My pretty much makes good, even in spite of a few technical compromises. The biggest hindrance to Me and My Katamari is its modest number of levels, even when considering the game's relatively short play time.

When he's not out getting drunk with the stars or embarking on an intergalactic ego trip, the quirky and charismatic King of All Cosmos likes to take it easy. At the beginning of Me and My Katamari, the King and the rest of the royal family go for beach-blanket fun, splashing about in the ocean. Unfortunately for the inhabitants of a chain of small islands nearby, the King gets a little too rambunctious, causing a tidal wave that wipes the islands off the map. Perhaps out of benevolence, but more likely because of his need to be liked by everyone, the King makes amends by sending his son, the Prince, out to collect matter out of which to create new islands. This is, as they say, where you come in. The opening cinematic sequence for Me and My establishes the delightfully irreverent and mildly insane tone that the series is best known for, though the game is pretty lean on cinematic sequences through the rest of the game, which is a little disappointing.

Review: The Sims 2 for PSP

Overall Score: 6.1
Graphics: 7
Sound: 7
Playability: 6
Multiplayer: n/a

Those little computer people known as The Sims have invaded nearly every video game platform there is since their debut in 1999 on the PC. Since then, the series has arguably been at its best on the PC, both in The Sims and The Sims 2, though the new PSP version does try new things and succeeds at several of them. Unfortunately, this new version of The Sims 2 has too many problems to be strongly recommended.

The PSP version of The Sims 2 doesn't attempt to reproduce all the complexity of the original PC game (and that's probably for the best). So, there's no DNA, sims don't have "memories" of what happens to them, and there's no aging, either. Instead, the new game reinterprets several of the series' features--for instance, it still lets you create a customized "sim" character with a specific personality and personal needs (or "motives," like hunger, boredom, and exhaustion) and with "aspirations," which are driving life goals that determine what kind of minor "want" goals will appear for them each day. However, the PSP game doesn't feature the PC game's "fears" (the opposite of wants)--instead, the game has a general "sanity" meter that fills up when you accomplish wants and that empties out when you fail. Also, the game includes an entirely new take on socializing. While the series has always emphasized character interactions (especially humorous ones between characters with different personalities), the PSP game uses a new timing-based minigame that requires you to match the abstract icons that accompany your neighbors' enthusiastic "simlish" gibberish speech.
