Bust-A-Move on DS and PSP

505 Gamestreet has announced that it will be publishing Bust-A-Move Ghost for the PSP and Bust-A-Move DS in the UK.

Bust-A-Move DS will utilise the DS's touch screen capabilities by replacing the traditional bubble cannon with a catapult. Using the stylus players will literally fling bubbles into the play area. Using the touch screen also makes for a faster paced game with no more waiting around for the cannon to rotate into place. If you are a Bust-A-Move purist then there's also the option to revert back to the traditional cannon style play.

A new "quick swap" function is also included, where a bubble is always held in reserve, allowing players to quickly switch to the reserve bubble for more options when trying to burst those bubbles. Up to four players will be able to take part in wireless multiplayer gaming, via the use of only one copy of the game.

Bust-A-Move Ghost on the PSP introduces a new Ghost mode that includes a Ghost bubble and a Heart meter. Also included is the classic gameplay with over 1000 new puzzles and four new games, including the PSP exclusive modes Running Launcher, Mix 'Em Up Double Shot and Time Warp. As with the DS game, wireless multiplayer is also supported.

Bust-A-Move DS is scheduled for release on Feb 24, with the PSP game coming a month later on March 24. Both titles are expected to retail for £29.99.

SCEA Announces Killzone Liberation for PSP

Scheduled for North American Q4 2006 release

Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. announced today the North American Q4 2006 release of Killzone: Liberation exclusively for the  PSP  system. Developed by Guerilla, a wholly owned subsidiary of  Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Killzone: Liberation is a third-person action game that puts the players into various missions to rescue hostages from the evil Helghast. Inspired by the events in Killzone for  PlayStation 2 (released in November, 2004), the story continues in Killzone: Liberation with the battle against the Helghast still raging on.

"We were keen to ensure Killzone: Liberation was totally unique and offered PSP owners a different Killzone experience. So, Killzone: Liberation has been developed from scratch -- creating what we think is an intense portable gaming experience," stated Hermen Hulst, Guerilla Managing Director . "Although Killzone: Liberation is totally new it stays true to what made the first Killzone such a great success -- the characters, weapons, style and a continuation of the same great plot."

About the Gameplay in Killzone: Liberation
Featuring an intelligent third person camera system, Killzone: Liberation allows players a more tactical surveillance viewpoint to view their action and read the enemy's behavior during gameplay. Set in an intense postmodern war reminiscent of the previous PlayStation 2 title, Killzone: Liberation features the unique graphical style to showcase pure grit and realism. During gameplay, players will have access to variety of weapons that are unique and innovative, inspired by modern military equipment.

About the Story in Killzone: Liberation
In Killzone: Liberation, two months after the events of Killzone, most of southern Vekta is still under Helghast control. The rules of war have been cast aside with the Helghast General, Metrac, employing brutal measures in order to seize the initiative and strengthen his position further. Returning as Templar, players will be sent on a mission to undertake a covert operation to save hostages captured by Metrac, while ISA troops continue the fight for liberty.

First PSP Demo Disc Mailed To Gamers

Sony has begun sending out a demo version of upcoming action title Pursuit Force to lucky PSP owners throughout North America. This marks the first time a demo disc has been sent out to the general public for a PSP title (that we know of), although the company has already sent out beta testers of games like SOCOM in the past.

PSP satnav this year?

Evidence of a GPS add-on for PSP has just emerged. Here’s the word on the street…
PSP satnav

An allegedly scanned page from the US edition of PlayStation Magazine (PSM) is currently doing rounds on various gaming forums, detailing an upcoming satnav accessory for PSP. The device is said to attach to PSP via its mini USB 2.0 socket, supported by a companion UMD disc featuring satnav software and street data that can be updated regularly. And no doubt such a gadget would be stacks cheaper than shelling out for a swanky standalone satnav. Plus, with PSP’s killer screen it could transform your handheld into a crystal clear co-pilot. Our only initial concern is the max volume of PSP’s loudspeaker – unless you’re car’s ultra quiet, listening out for directions could be extremely tough.

In similar news, the same scanned article also claims that an upcoming firmware upgrade will feature Sony Mail – a new and simple-to-use emailing system for PSP.

Sony has yet to confirm the reality either product, but an announcement is rumoured to be on the cards at this year’s upcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in May. Stay tuned for more details as they break.

Koloomn's large over PSP - Follow-Up to Lumines?

PSP owners still looking for something to follow on from the puzzling fun of Lumines (at least, those of you who haven't given up and bought a DS yet) might be interested to hear that 505 Gamestreet has signed up Japanese developer Cyber Front's puzzle game Koloomn for release on February 24th.

You've probably heard of it even if you think you haven't - it's actually the game known to Americaland as Ultimate Block Party. Released in the US late 2005, it got some pretty decent reviews.

The idea is to rotate four blocks in a little square to make same-coloured groups, which then disappear. It's done on a Tetris-style grid, and - not unlike Zoo Keeper - you can start chain reactions with a bit of swift spinning.

There's Tutorial and Practice modes, an "Endless" mode, an Arcade mode and some Vs modes including Wi-Fi multiplayer for two of you. In multiplayer, each cleared colour is like a special attack against your foe - red makes your opponent's cursor bigger, orange makes the colour of your cursor unrecognisable in your rival's play area, blue makes giant blocks drop on him, yellow hides entire rows from him, and purple makes chunks of his blocks clump together unbreakably.

Check out our screenshot gallery to see how it looks and we'll bring you more on it closer to release. Or if Rupert lets me import it, which seems unlikely after the way he raised his eyebrows at "Rio de Carnival DS (the one about ***) - £22" on the last expense sheet.

PSP Getting Nintendogs-like franchise?

Yuke’s Media Creations, the developers behind many wrestling games on multiple platforms, has announced a new project for Sony PSP. Its a dog simulation named The Dog Happy Life. The release date in Japan is 27 April, 2006... do the publishers (who are currently unknown) have the balls to give this a western release in direct competition with Nintendo’s puppy simulator?

The screen shots show that you can take photos of your dog, select accessories and change the items of the house. If this game wants to succeed over Nintendogs, the simulator will have to make use of the PSPs functions, such as allowing you to download new accessories off the Internet, let you listen to music off the memory stick in your home and maybe turn images from your pro duo into posters for your doggy pad.

UMD's to be bundled with DVD, Blu-ray

It came in over the Reuters newswire today that Sony has announced it’s marketing plan for Blu-ray movies being released this summer. This new media format will debut in the same price range as DVD’s when they hit the shelves back in 1997 with new releases going for $23.45 and “catalog” titles selling at $17.95. That’s all well and good you might say, but what’s that have to do with the PSP? Sony also announced that they will be selling special “bundle” packages for DVD and Blu-ray movies that include the UMD version of the film as well. Starting March 28, you will be able to find the DVD-UMD combo packs for:

  • The Grudge
  • Resident Evil
  • Underworld
  • Crouching Tiger, hidden Dragon
  • The Terminator

These releases will be followed by a second release April 25 for the following movies:

  • Ghostbusters
  • Mad Max
  • The Fifth Element
  • Snatch

A third set of combos will be released sometime in May. These combos will sell for $28.95 (MSRP) which could count as a deal in some cases. This new marketing strategy sets up Sony’s future goal with Blu-ray to “try to introduce the managed-copy concept, where if you buy Blu-ray you'll be able to get additional versions (of the same title) to use in your home. Ultimately, we might even get to the point where we'll offer consumers the ability to have different versions of the same movie on different devices in the home -- that's something we're working on," says Sony Pictures Home Entertainment president Benjamin Feingold.

Koloom - Block Busting Puzzle Game For the PSP - Announced

The critically acclaimed portable puzzle game Koloomn is an essential addition to any PSP owner's pocket. Taking its inspiration from granddaddy of the genre Tetris – only turning the concept literally on its head – Koloomn is a puzzle game where you use a cursor to spin groups of different coloured blocks against each other in an ever-advancing well of bricks. Rotate chunks of four different coloured blocks together until you match four or more of the same colour. Watch them pop for instant points or swiftly spin yet more blocks to match their colours in order to start a chain reaction. How many chains can you make? How many blocks can you pop?

The block-rotating gameplay mechanic makes for a far more complex and challenging puzzle experience and players can even force more blocks up into the well in a risky bid to have access to yet more bricks. Careful though – when the blocks hit the top of the play area it's all over.

Koloomn is a case study in defining the term "easy to learn, hard to master". Novice players can take the game at their own pace by learning how to effectively combine blocks and set up chains in Tutorial and Practice modes, while hardcore puzzle fanatics can increase the difficulty level and speed of play, as well as face off against CPU-controlled masters in VS CPU mode, or take on a never-ending onslaught in Endless mode, or by stepping up to the varied challenges and puzzles in Arcade mode. Wireless multiplayer is also supported for two players.

Playing Koloomn in VS matches transforms the action further as special attack blocks come into play. In multiplayer matches, each different coloured block cleared unleashes a special attack against your foe. Red blocks make your opponent's cursor bigger and therefore more awkward. Orange blocks make the colours of the blocks targeted in your cursor unrecognisable in your rival's well. Blues make giant blocks drop into your opponent's play area, yellows hide entire rows of blocks from your rival, and purples make chunks of blocks in your foe's well clump together. Throw in special magic blocks and eight CPU-controlled characters each with their own devastating special combo attack, and it all adds up to one of the most frantic multiplayer puzzle experiences available today.

Koloomn is a brand new puzzle game IP by Japanese developer Cyber Front. It has been critically acclaimed in the US, where it was released at the end of 2005 as Ultimate Block Party. Koloomn is available to buy on PSP on 24th February, priced £29.99.
