PSP to get GPS, email, and probably a lot more PS2 game ports

You have to give the Ars forums props, they're pretty clean graphically. Whenever I go to any other forum I'm just struck dumb by the sheer amount of pictures, sigs, and visual noise. Don't even try to go to a car forum. You'll literally die as every post is followed by almost a page long signature describing what the poster has done to their El Camino.

I braved the Sony forums to see a reported scan from the new Official Playstation Magazine. Apparently the next firmware update will include a system to send and receive email from your PSP. You can also expect to see a GPS system for Sony's handheld. Here's hoping the picture isn't the finished design.

This is all well and good, firmware updates are nice and more functionality is something we can all get behind. I will say I get cramps just thinking about typing even a very short message using the PSP buttons. You have to wonder when Sony's going to put more effort into making better games for the system, and not making it simply a gadget. At this rate you may be looking at the perfect Jack of all trades, master of none.

Here's the post from Sony's site:

March 06 PSM describes an upcoming PSP firmware update that will include an e-mail client.  Sony Mail will let users setup a PSP e-mail account using the PSP's unique system ID instead of wrestling with server setup.

Hopefully it'll have the ability to access more than just the PSP account.  I can almost smell the unified login, baby.

A GPS addon is on the way later in 2006 and will be accompanied by the release of map UMD's.  I wonder if games will use the GPS peripheral?

(Note from Auri: I think that looks fake as heck, but who knows)

MasterPiece3D and eLoader Battery Trick

A couple of interesting developments are coming out of our Development Forum this weekend. First off, let’s start with MasterPiece3D - you may remember LostJared’s release of the puzzle game MasterPiece which was compatible with 2.01+ PSP’s, well now he’s released a 3D version of the game which works on all firmware versions including 2.01+ using the eLoader. Plus it looks really cool!

Here’s where it gets kind of odd. LostJared, along with his 2.60 testing partner teknogeek1300, have come across a little trick that seems to effect the reliability of programs starting with eLoader on 2.60 firmware. For some unknown reason, removing the battery from the PSP for a few seconds and then putting it back in will help make a homebrew program initialize properly on the first try. You can download a video of this procedure and read more about the procedure below. Go check it out and report your findings.

Download MasterPiece3D here.
