Sony speculated to launch new online service for PS3, PSP

New online service allegedly resembles Xbox Live, iTunes all in one; speculated Sept. launch.

var gnEbMinZIndex = 10000; var gfEbInIframe = false; var gEbBAd = new Object(); gEbBAd.nFlightID = 109152; gEbBAd.nWidth = 300; gEbBAd.nHeight = 250; var gstrEbRandnum = new String(Math.random()); gstrEbRandnum = gstrEbRandnum.substring(gstrEbRandnum.indexOf(".")+1 , gstrEbRandnum.length); gEbBAd.strNonSupported = "http://bs.serving-sys.com/BurstingPipe/NonSupportedBanner.asp?FlightID=109152&Page=&PluID=0&Width=300&Height=250&Pos=" + gstrEbRandnum; function ebBannerFlash_0_16359516761215531140063226921_DoFSCommand(command,args){ebScriptWin0_16359516761215531140063226921.gEbBanners[0].displayUnit.handleFSCommand(command,args,"ebBannerFlash_0_16359516761215531140063226921");}
Earlier this morning, gaming news site Next Generation announced that Sony plans to launch an online service that bears resemblance to Microsoft's Xbox Live. Currently referred to as PlayStation HUB, it will allow PlayStation 3 owners to chat, download demos, and play games online. There are also plans to enable support for PSP online play. It appears a step in a different direction from Sony's relatively laissez-faire approach to online gaming in regard to the PlayStation 2, which left online play in the hands of publishers, and has been widely considered inferior to Xbox Live.

Allegedly, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe is developing HUB, and has been describing it as a "subscriber service" to developers, implying that there will be a fee to utilize its services. Also, according to the article, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer is pushing to integrate downloadable media, such as music and movies, into the service, a move that would rival Apple's iTunes store.

Also included in the article is the news that developers seem to be leaning toward a September launch date for the PlayStation 3 based on the release schedule for launch titles, although there are no specifics in regard to launch territory. The assumption seems to be that Japan and the US will see the machine first, although there is still no set launch date for the hardware. A few developers have also speculated a September 16 Japanese launch and a September 21 American launch. However, with fluid pace that release dates are revised, even the Next Gen piece mentioned that those dates are far from concrete.

When contacted, a spokesperson for Sony declined to comment, stating that any information in Next Gen's article is purely speculation. GameSpy will continue to report on any news pertaining to PlayStation 3's online services, as well as any launch information, as it becomes available.

Addon for Nintendo DS May Rival Sony’s PSP Functionality

A little off topic, but interesting nonetheless!

There is a new accessory for the Nintendo DS (Dual Screen) that has the potential of adding functionality that could rival the Sony PSP (Playstation Portable). This add-on has the ability to turn a DS - which will only play games now - into a handheld media center.

Produced by Datel (the same company which makes the 4GB hard drive and extended battery packs for the PSP), the MAX Media Player for the Nintendo DS will bring music, video, and photo capabilities to the DS. The device adds 4GB of storage which should be enough for most anyone. The device plugs into the GBA (Game Boy Advanced) cartridge slot, draws power from the DS, and will support MP3, multiple video formats, and JPGs. This is a real rival to the functionality of the Sony PSP handheld system.

The device is rather pricy though as it runs about $224 which is almost twice the cost of the individual DS handheld system. (and $24 more than a used PSP, without all the cool PSP games, UMD-Video, expansion, high-resolution screen, speed, and more <grin>)

And, for those gamers who can't wait to experience managing on the go, there's even better news. Football Manager Handheld just got better as SI announce an increase in each team's squad sizes from 30 to 36 players.

Sports Interactive and SEGA have also confirmed brand new Xbox Live features, adding a whole new dimension to multiplayer management. These features include an option allowing you to export your previously saved teams and go head-to-head with other human bosses competing in a 16-team knockout cup or 8-team league competition - arguments over whose team is best have just become a thing of the past.

You can also gauge your progress as a manager using Xbox 360's new Gamerpoints system, which awards managers points for everything from signing your first player to going a whole season unbeaten.

(Off Topic): Playstation 3: Without A HDD?

Sony has recently updated their official webpage with "new" information regarding the Playstation 3.

Sony has officially incorporated a Playstation 3 section onto their official company website. While the majority of the alloted information has previously been revealed, the company's listing of the next-generation system may have revealed a surprising fact regarding the device.

The system's official page lists a HDD, or Hard Drive along with products like SD memory cards and Compact flash sticks as "sold separately". The news of this comes as a shock to many associated with the gaming industry, as Sony's forthcoming console has consistently been rumored to incorporate HDD functionality.

While the company's website officially identifies the device as a separate peripheral, official details regarding the Playstation 3 have not been revealed on the topic of storage medium. The Advanced Media Network will continue to monitor this developing situation.
