PSP Beats DS on Japan Sales Charts

Sony's PSP handheld beat the Nintendo DS on Japan sales charts by several hundred units, a report from research data firm Media Create said Thursday.

From Jan. 30 to Feb. 5, the PSP sold 25,905 units to best the Nintendo DS' 25,321 units sold in the same week.

The touch-screen handheld remains in limited supply after strong software drove several hundred thousands units to consumers in the weeks prior.

Nintendo also lost steam on the software sales charts this week on strong sales from several PS2 titles.

The Nintendo DS hardware will see a transition period in Japan when the new version, Nintendo DS Lite makes it to the retail channel on Mar. 2.

The new version will be 2/3 the size of the original and feature four backlit settings.

Nintendo announced this week that it will offer free game downloads at U.S. retail kiosks and will feature lobby voice chat in the upcoming Nintendo DS game, Metroid Prime Hunters.

First Photos of Nintendo DS Lite

Yeah, I know it's a tad off topic, but I'm sure you want to see this. Otherwise, why would you be reading this blog entry? <grin>

First photos of Nintendo DS Lite

The bandages are off! We’ve been teased with concept art, but now here’s the real thing. And what a testament to the wonders of plastic surgery!
Nintendo DS Lite

The old-style Nintendo DS just couldn’t compete with PSP in the purtiness stakes. It was like Anne Widdecombe vs Angelina Jolie. But the updated DS Lite is in a different league to its predecessor looks-wise, and here’s the proof…

It’s two-thirds the size of the original machine and 20 percent lighter. And as you can see in our gallery section below it’ll be available in a few shades, including crystal white, ice blue and our personal fave, enamel navy. All very tempting. Especially with the fact that PSP’s line-up of games is still somewhat disappointing – barring a few quality titles like GTA, Virtua Tennis and WipEout – DS Lite with its innovative catalogue becomes a very appealing prospect. Especially with it’s global multiplayer Wi-Fi gaming experience now in full swing, and the announcement of free game demo downloads from next month.

It’s first scheduled for launch in Japan this March, with Europe and the US expected to follow shortly after.
