PSP Phone Receiver Mod

This oddball PSP mod takes a 3.5mm phono plug and adapts it to a phone receiver. How this is useful is beyond me but it's still interesting nonetheless.

New PlayStation Games hit PlayStation Store

Just in time for Christmas, Sony Japan has announced a new batch of PlayStation Store downloads for the Japanese market. Set to go live on 12/21 are nine PlayStation classics, all priced at the usual 525 yen.

This update includes a variety of titles, some of which traveled outside Japan years ago, and some of which remained Japan only. Here's a look:
  • R-Types (Irem, shooter)
  • Taiyo no Shippo (aka Tail of the Sun, Artdink, action)
  • U-SA (Artdink, puzzle)
  • Dino Crisis (Capcom, action-adventure)
  • Global Force (SCE, sim)
  • Gekisou Tomaranna (SCE, racing)
  • Maru Oukoku no Ningyou Hime (Nippon Ichi, RPG)
  • The Convenie Ano Machi wo Dokusen se yo (Hamster, sim)
  • Mr. Driller (Bandai Namco Games, action)
As with the original batch of downloads, these games require a PS3 for downloading, but can only be played on the PSP. In order to run them on your PSP, you'll need to update your PSP firmware to version 3.03, which has been made available as of today.

These titles are currently set only for the Japanese PlayStation store. We'll let you know if Sony decides to give audiences outside of Japan a sweet Christmas present as well.

Firmware 3.03 - No Devhook Support, Yet

Sony has released PSP System Update, 3.03 today. Like the previous 3.0x releases, it doesn't offer anything exciting unless you have a PS3. "[The PLAYSTATION Network] Titles which can be played from the PSN have been increased" is the only update that Sony says is included in the software upgrade. As the title indicates, this version will not work with DevHook. While most modules in the update were left with their keys unchanged, some of the modules have different keys than in previous versions, making decryption and Devhook support impossible for the time being. This release does not come with home brew functionality so don't upgrade if you'd like to continue enjoying that luxury. With that, you may download the update below should you wish to install it on your PSP.

PSP to hit 1m UK sales in 2006

Think the PSP is struggling? Think again. Sony has told MCV that it is confident of selling one million units in the UK before the end of the year, safely securing its place as the second best-selling console of 2006.

After a raft of online fanboy disdain and hype surrounding its home console rivals, the PSP has managed to comfortably outsell both PS2 and Xbox 360 in 2006 – leaving its performance at UK retail second only to Nintendo’s DS.

“People mention us in the same breath as DS because we’re both handheld products, but we’re actually going after very different markets,” Sony UK’s commercial director Kevin Jowett told MCV. “We’ve put in just under £300 million of turnover at retail with PSP because we’re such a boys console and we’ve hit the mark with older gamers.”

The PSP arrived in the UK to much fanfare last September, and quickly became the fastest selling console the territory had ever seen. But the rise of the DS and the troubling performance of UMD have dampened enthusiasm surrounding the format.

However, ChartTrack’s statistics bear out the fact that 2006 has truly been the Year Of The Handheld – and that PSP has been a dominant force. And Sony sees much more to come next year.

Jowett added: “The evolution you’ll see on PSP will be greater than any console Sony has ever released, starting with new peripherals like the PSP camera, which is out in early 2007.”

Onkyo's VR-1000J media transfering device for PSP/NDS/mobile/etc

Media. All we ever want is to make our media files more portable and "transfer-friendly." It's one thing to have them on your computer. It's another thing to have them on your TiVo. And ultimately, it's a whole lot different if you have them in your pocket (well, if you've got PSP/NDS-sized pockets, that is).

Onkyo is set to release their latest media recorder, the VR-1000J, on Christmas day. What it does is transfer media from your TV to your memory storage card. You don't need to learn Japanese just to understand how the device works. Just check out the pic below to get an idea of the device's power:

It supports Mpeg4 format for video and AAC/G.726/AMR for audio onto your memory stick or SD card for whatever device you might have (yes, even a mobile phone).

(Off Topic) Fun Project: Program Your Home's External Christmas Lights

I couldn't resist... after seeing the way cool holiday light display that engineer did last year, I wanted to know how to do it myself. Well, Microsoft has published a How-To guide for .NET developers... Yeah, I know it's not PSP-related, but maybe we could do something similar with the PSP. Either way, if you're a programmer, check this out...
