TA-082 Downgrader a fake, says Dark_AleX

Just as the title says, Dark_Alex claims that the recently released TA-082 downgrader is a fake. Chatting with jas0nuk (thanks for the heads up!), DAX mentioned a couple of reasons as to why he thought this release is not a legitimate one: "eloader don't load prxs", "the text file with keys that it generates don't seem to be used at all", "the person that creates it is not very reliable", and - probably the clincher - "the first result in google of him: a virus page".

Now, Dark_Alex is Dark_Alex and his word is always taken for the truth. TA-082 users have been waiting for this downgrader for such a loooong time now that we won't blame them if this time they take DAX's word with a grain of salt and scamper to try out this downgrader. But in the words of QJ blogger Pranav, "we don't want to be part of the confusion" and also since we don't wanna take part in you guys bricking PSPs, we decided to take down the file.

Now, we have warned you: This downgrader is a fake. If anyone does decide to go somewhere else for the files, you're doing so at your own risk.

Virii and Guerrillas, Blogs and Sony

N'gai Croal notes in his blog that Sony should address the problem of them not having an active presence in the realm of blogging. He cites Ozymandias (Andre Virgnaud) and other Microsoft bloggers like Major Nelson, Gamerscore, and Game Tycoon as a nice example Microsoft reaching out and making a connection with the citizens of the internet.

Although Ozymandias' motives are, as N'gai Croal puts it, "hilariously transparent", Ozymandias' blog does well to bash anything and everything Sony. Furthermore, it provides that consumer-to-company link that Microsoft needs.

N'gai notes that Sony fails at giving consumers information that they really need, straight from the company they purchased or acquired the products from. For example, he says that when PS3 firmware updates are released, nothing in the download process really explains what the updates do. Yes, the updates page on the official Sony site gets updated from time to time, but it's nothing as powerful, reassuring, and as effective as say, a Major Nelson blog update. Often times people will have to go to sites like like QJ, or at NeoGaf for immediate word on the matter.

Remember PS3 Firmware Update v1.3?

The gap is there. A Sony "fan-boy" would sooner trust an obscure post by 0okm or a quick how-to from Pranav, than wait for the Sony site to update. A Microsoft "xbot" will go to Major Nelson's blog. Big gap right there.

Tilt-sense hax make DS and PSP go-go

Let's see: PSP-styled digital nubs on a DS, PS2 sticks on a PSP (heck the only thing missing is plugging the Xbox 360 guide button into either and we've got ourselves a three-way haxfest... er, forget I said that). And grandpasmurf of AcidMODS informs us of more cross-pollination going on in the control department. This time, he's plugging in a couple of motion sensors/accelerometers onto the DS and PSP so that they can be played like a SIXAXIS.

Yes, SIXAXIS. For those of you who want a Wiimote, find an IR sensor and bar to include in the package.

The demo unit is a DS Lite, but you will note that it plugs through a mini-USB port, so grandpasmurf says it can definitely be used with the PSP, too. Absent of any other details from grandpasmurf - hey, pay us a visit and drop us the 411, if you can - we can speculate that the said mini-USB port wires to the D-pad, similar to the Ghetto Joystik/Ben Heck PSP analog mods.

Uploading PSP vids to Youtube, minus a PC

Okay, so you've already captured videos of your family at their most embarrassing moments with the PSP camera, now what do you do? Upload them for blackmail on the net, of course. And for many net-savvy gamers, the site of choice would have to be Youtube. For the guys just wondering how exactly to pull that off, you're in luck.

Just after yesterday's release, zmcnulty has put up another set of Youtube videos for fellow PSP owners out there, and these will be guiding us through the process of uploading PSP camera-recorded videos direct from the portable into Youtube. But before you get started on the videos, zmcnulty notes important details on the video settings:
  • The Camera needs at least firmware 3.00 or above to work.
  • The ideal video setting for youtube uploads is 320 x 240.
  • (Obviously) You'll need an existing Youtube account.
Now, on to the viewing.

Sony to Offer PSP Video Downloads to Compete with iTunes

Apparently Sony is getting the video download bug just like Microsoft and Apple...

From the Wall Street Journal:

Facing the increasing popularity of Apple Computer's iTunes

video downloading service, Sony is soon to introduce its own

video-downloading capability, which will enable consumers to

purchase movies online and watch them on Sony's PlayStation

Portable, according to people with knowledge of the matter.

The new service has been in the works for about a year and

will likely be introduced in the first part of 2007.

Thanks to Tony for the tip.
