PS3 and Wii: Complete and Synchronized Unboxing

An event that happens less than Neptune colliding with Uranus: two consoles arriving on our doorstep simultaneously. Actually now that we think about it, it's only happened once...ever. The Wii and PS3 have landed, and only Gizmodo has the exclusive unboxing of both next-gen devices. This is the retail PS3, which unlike the test PS3 units everyone else got, is the actual console you'll be getting in stores.

Even with the Sizmodo, it was hard for us to appreciate just how tiny the Wii is compared to the PS3. All that "next-gen" graphics makes Sony's console twice as tall and twice as fat.

Turn Your PSP into a Genesis (Sega Genesis Collection Released)

Forget next-gen console launches and fancy HD graphics, the big release this week is Sega Genesis Collection on PSP. Featuring more than 30 games, the $29.99 collection is a Genesis fan's dream. While the Sega Genesis Collection was released last week for PS2, the PSP version features several different games, including completely different unlockable Sega arcade games.

If you're looking at some long plane trips for the upcoming holidays, you may want to give Sega Genesis Collection a look. Phantasy Star IV will last your 80 hours on its own. Enjoy.

Lumines II Proves Women are Better than Men

From SPOnG:

Buena Vista Games' PR company sends word to SPOnG this grey, depressing dreich-y day that it has actual proof that women are better than men.

Well, what BVG actually sent is a report on a study, which it commissioned, from a “leading female U.K. psychologist”. Said report apparently backs up the theory that women may be physically and emotionally programmed to be better than men at strategic games such as Lumines II and Tetris.

U.K. psychologist Susan Quilliam claims that her study proves that, "Contrary to popular belief women don't want fluffy themes in their games…[women’s] sensory perception and wider peripheral vision means they spot game elements more speedily and successfully than men do - and Lumines II's structure and design allows female players to capitalise on all these strengths".

According to Quilliam, Lumines II appeals “to the female ability to analyse, categorise and link large amounts of small detail".

Interestingly BVG is pimping Lumines II as a game that turns your PSP into an “interactive iPod, enabling players to listen to their favourite tracks whilst playing the game.” Try doing that while walking down the street without damaging something or someone.

SPOnG has requested both a copy of the full report and an interview with its author, 'leading UK psychologist' Susan Quilliam. With this in mind, we would like you to supply questions that we can put to Ms Quilliam – who has an honours degree in Psychology, University of Liverpool, by the way.

PS3 debut leads to violence, disorder

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The debut of Sony's PlayStation 3 game console resulted in reports Friday of disorder outside stores throughout the United States, as well as a robbery attempt in Connecticut that left one man shot and wounded.

Police in Putnam, Conn., said fans resisted two armed men in an attempted robbery outside of a Wal-Mart.

According to Lt. J. Paul Vance of the Connecticut State Police, officers were called to the Wal-Mart at 3:15 a.m. ET after two armed men tried to rob people waiting in line to get the PS3 when the store opened.
Shortages: PS3, T.M.X, Elmo, Plasma TVs

Vance told CNNMoney.com that about 15 to 20 people were outside the Wal-Mart (Charts) store when they were confronted by the robbers who demanded money. The lieutenant said one of the men in line was shot after he confronted the armed suspect. The robbers fled the scene after the incident.

Wal-Mart declined to comment on the incident.
Wal-Mart shuts store

In a separate incident, the manager of a 24-hour Wal-Mart supercenter in Palmdale, Calif., shut the store and called the cops after crowds became unruly.

Deputy sheriff Dan McPherson at Palmdale station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said about 50 to 100 people had gathered outside the store before midnight in the hopes of scoring a PS3.

"We were called after the manager told us that these people were arguing and pushing each other," McPherson said. "We told them they had to leave the premises."
