Best Buy Shows New Release Date for Final Fantasy: Advent Children (PSPUpdates)

7190443Potential bad news for all of those waiting for Final Fantasy: Advent Children to be released on UMD. It would appear, according to Best Buy’s website, that the release date has been moved back to 6/1/2006. Is this a typo? An error? A glitch, or perhaps just a new “estimated” release date?

PSP-HTTPD v0.4: Portable Web Server (Homebrew)

Elxx continues his work on PSP-HTTPD, releasing version 0.4. As we previously reported, PSP-HTTPD is a program, now written for Lua Player v0.16, which can serve files to your PC from your PSP. Using the PSP’s WiFi connection, you can turn your PSP into an extremely portable web-server, or a mobile homepage if that’s the way you like to roll. Changes in this "supercharged" release were divulged by Elxx in our forums.

Here's a nice and supercharged version of my PSP web server, powered by the recently released LuaPlayer 0.16.

What this does is basically let you download files from your PSP using your wireless network connection. You can browse through the memory stick wirelessly, using only the web browser on your computer. HTML pages will even be sent so you could run a website off your PSP. Thus, it turns your PSP into an HTTP Daemon.

In 0.4, there have been some huge changes to the transfers. LuaPlayer 0.16 has apparently fixed the issues with the WLAN connection dropping randomly, so you should be able to run the server for several hours. Remember to have it hooked up to the charger though! Now, you will also be prompted at the start of the app to choose which WLAN connection to use.

In addition, I have once again improved the error handling. With a nice quality connection, you can easily hit speeds of over 100 kb/s! That means you can listen to the MP3's on your PSP without even having to wait for them to download (if you have software that can stream like that). I eagerly await your comments on how fast you were able to push the server. Just keep bumping up the chunk size and see how fast your transfers can get.

Have fun, and don't hesitate to give comments and suggestions.

Changelog for v0.4:
* Added WLAN profile chooser at startup [thanks modsyn]
* Improved error handling now resends only missing portions of chunks, allowing higher speeds
* Default chunk size increased to 8192

NeoCD PSP v0.6.1 (Homebrew)

http://pspupdates.qj.net/uploaded_images/NEOCD_logo01_trim-788632.png-729535.jpg

Well if nothing else, Zelurker works fast! He released a fix for NeoCD PSP 6.0 before we even found out it was out. There was alot fixed and improved in this version of yoyofr’s original NeoCD PSP v0.5, the NeoGeo CD emulator for the PSP, so we'll get right to the changes:
Version 0.6
- fixed the crash in Karnov's revenge when pressing X on the title screen.
- Fixed the freeze of magician lord when you enter your name for a hiscore
- Fixed the freeze of 2020 super baseball at start
- The fps counter is now readable (does not blink all the time as before), and it really displays 60 when it should, and not 61.
- Autoframeskip : in the menu you can choose frameskip: auto. In this mode, the game skips frames when it has to only. If you display the fps counter in this mode, it shows the number of frames actually skipped between [] if it has skipped some.
- Finally fixed the disappearing graphics in "Art of fighting"
- Fixed sounds for games with very big samples (art of fighting for example)
- Reverted to the loading picture from neocdsdl, quite better than the the previous one... !
- Fixed bad music un bust a move and probably some other bad sounds in some other games by adapting the code for the ym2610 from raine !
- Worked around the crash of Cross Swords 2 : it's caused by an error in decoding the 3rd track (mp3). But it doesn't make any sense, and even if the file is re-encoded, I still get the error. I worked around it by making it a non fatal error, now the track is just ignored. I'll have
to investigate this later...
- When a game tries to load a mp3 and you didn't create a mp3 directory for it (neocd.mp3) don't display anymore a stupid error message behind the game screen
- Speedup : use solid masks to avoid transparent sprites
- Removed the 68k & z80 frequencies options from the gui, they would be ignored because of the new timers. I should add speed hacks one day...
- LOTS of code cleanup

Known problems :
- After launching 3 or 4 games in a row, you loose sound effects !!!

Version 0.6.1
-Fixed bug with transparent sprites handling which made lots of sprites to disappear in Art of Fighting 2, and some others
-I made sure the audio is really muted before loading game files (it was creating an annoying noise when loading "Art of Fighting 2" game files, at the begining of the game).
-Voltage Fighter Gowcaizer should work now, it was just an error message which was messing the game screen.

January 5, 2006 - A financial update from Take Two Games not only announced preliminary fiscal 2005 results today, but -- as is often the case in such reports -- revealed some tasty new titles and game delays for the year ahead.

Perhaps most significant to gamers is the revelation that Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories will come to PlayStation 2 after enjoying its initial life on the PSP. The PS2 version is expected in the company's second quarter, which covers February through April. Rockstar's hardly neglecting Sony's portable system, of course -- the company confirmed a second GTA game is coming to PSP, along with another new title for the platform.

Along with thug action, Rockstar will create an Xbox 360 game based on a new brand, as well as a sequel to an existing Rockstar property -- for as-yet-unannounced platforms. Players can also expect to see NBA 2K7 on multiple systems sometime in the near future, and all-new Family Feud game as well.

With the good news come a few delays. College Hoops 2K6 for X360 and Top Spin 2 for X360, Nintendo DS, and Game Boy Advance will now arrive in the company's second quarter.

Citing continuing uncertainty as the game industry transitions to a new console generation, Take Two is taking a humble stance in its financial outlook. The company now expects $230 to $250 million in net sales for its first 2006 quarter. Take Two is not offering guidance for all of 2006, but now expects revenue and earnings "significantly below" previous guidance and analyst estimates.

Take Two announced preliminary and unaudited financial results of $1.2 billion in net sales for fiscal 2005, ended October 31, 2005. The company is reporting a preliminary $308 million in net sales for Q4 2005.

"Clearly, the holiday season did not live up to anyone's expectations," commented president and CEO Paul Eibeler. "While it is difficult to assess the impact of the hardware transition on our industry in 2006, we remain confident in the resilience and future prospects of Take-Two and the global video game business. We have assembled some of the industry's best development capabilities supported by strong financial resources, and we expect to capture market share in an expanding Xbox 360 installed base and from the anticipated introduction of the PlayStation 3 later this year."

PMP Mod v1.00 gets Modified (Homebrew)

One of the hottest homebrew applications out right now is PMP Mod v1.00 by Jonny. This program took some very big steps towards getting a decent media player for the PSP that will play DivX and Xvid video files. Now Malloc has taken Jonny's work a bit further adding some extra options so users can adjust the display properties a bit, as well as adding some more playback controls. If you're new to PMP, don't forget to download Jonny's PMP Muxer to create the proper video file [here]. Here are the changes Malloc has made:

- a volume booster function (up and down can be used to change the volume from x1 to x2, x4, or x8 during play, usefull for the low volume scenes)

- a resume function (when the video is exited with triangle, the position is saved in a small file, and when the video is played again, it goes directly where it was saved)

- Left and Right trigger can be used to adjust the luminosity during playback (it's usefull to add a bit of luminosity to remove the bad ghosting effect of the LCD screen in dark scenes)

- if START is pressed during play, it goes to the start of the video.

- if the .PMP.POS file is selected in the file selector, it launches the .PMP directly

MaDGiC Pentomino v0.1.0a Released (Homebrew)

Moaku has emailed PSPUpdates his first public version of the puzzle game Pentomino for the PSP. But don't let that fool you, he's put in alot of work on this game and it is very well done - and very addictive! The goal is to place the Teris-like shapes, called Pentominoes, on the number grid in order to come up with the highest number total possible. Here's what Moaku had to say:

I've choose the Pentomino. Searching google, I found numbers of variants that I
never heard about that don't use digits, so I guessed that this gamebase that I
learned to play with when I was 10 was the perfect choice.

Each game mode will have its own rules variants. Please refer to the help screen
ingame to know more about these variants.
Anyway, basic rules are to be known before playing.

The goal is simple, We have some shapes, or more precisely Pentominoes (shapes
made with 5 adjacents squares), and you have to place these shapes freely
(direction, face) on a grid of random digits between 0 and 9 in order to make
that the sum of all covered grid cells digits reach the maximum you can.

PSPMPVerter v0.2 for PMP Mod (Homebrew)

PSPUpdats just made a post earlier today about a new version of the PMP Mod media player, and that was enough to get BaLdMoNkEy to come out of hiding and let us know about his AVI to PMP converting program, PSPMPVerter. This should be a welcome release to those of you having a hard time getting your AVI files into the right format for PMP Mod using PMP Muxer. It does require you to install a couple programs in order for it to work, but that should be simple enough as BaLdMoNkEy gives us plenty of details:

This app requires:

- A copy of mencoder from [here] under "Precompiled Mencoder binaries" (mencoder.exe)

- A copy of PMP Muxer from [here]

- VB6 Runtimes (included in most windows anyway)

How to use:

Click browse, choose your file, click calculate to calculate resolution.
You have 2 options, to make a bat file and not execute it, for your own
purposes, and just a plain convert button which makes the batch file and
then executes it.

The encoded pmp file will appear in the same directory as the original
video file when everything is finished (when the dos windows disappears).
During the process the original gui does not need to be open at all.

You can set video bitrate to whatever you want and compatible audio
bitrates are in the drop down box.

The resolution and other settings can also be set in the batch file, you
just need to be able to deduce which setting is which (not too hard at all)

Cruise Control - PSP Style (PSPUpdates)

I've seen quite a bit this week while I've been keeping a close eye on the goings on at CES for you fine readers, but this has to be the coolest thing I've seen roll into Las Vegas. We've driven vehicles on the PSP in games like Grand Theft Auto and Need for Speed. We're controlled our TV's and PS2's using the PSP as a remote control. Thanks to the insane people at Metro Electronics in America, now you can drive a car USING the PSP as a remote. This totally pimped out a '94 Honda Civic and turned it into a Sony Fanboy's dream come true - assuming that he's old enough to drive.

Aside from the 24 LCD screens (there's one in the front grill, for crying out loud!), three amps, and too many speakers to count, you can use the PSP to open doors, roll down windows, and even take it for a spin, all using a WiFi connection. Which leaves us with one question: What isn't the PSP capable of?

Answer: Coming up with the quarter million dollars this ride will cost you... if it were for sale... which it's not...

(Note from Auri: They weren't handing these out when I was there... maybe they read my  badge? <grin>)

We have reported about the PSP Media Manager for managing your media files for your PSP, is priced $19.95.

But one of our users, William, has sent us an email, saying he got a free copy of the software when he was looking at it on CES today. He said:

“I was at CES today and was looking at media manager and they gave it to me.”

According to Gamers Reports, Shiny Entertainment has posted a job listing for a PSP programmer for an unannounced PSP title that “harkens back to the earliest days of Shiny’s game development history”. Shiny Entertainment is responsible for titles such as Earthworm Jim, MDK, Enter the Matrix, Path of Neo and others. Could we be seeing some Earthworm Jim action on our “Shiny” PSP’s? Either way, it will be great to see some retro titles being redone for the PSP.

Initial D Street Stage Coming to PSP (PSPHacks)

Was just at the local Tsutaya and noticed there was a new flyer there.  Looks like Sega is releasing an InitialD game for the PSP.  Of all the games.  Just got interested in the Initial D stuff myself, seeing as how the car I own is in the game (so hard to find a game with a Suzuki Cappuccino in it).

Game will be released 2006.2.23 and will cost 4800 yen.  Right now a release is planned for Japan only.

                                 SUZUKI CAPPUCCINO

Based on my Japanese reading capabilities, this game has the following features:

  • 7 Car Manufacturers
  • 30 Different Cars
  • 26 Opponents
  • 200 Cards

This games has the following modes available:

  • Arcade Mode
  • Time Attack Mode
  • Dog Fight Mode (Via ad-hoc wireless lan)
  • Euro Bet mode ?

Anyways, it looks like it'll be a game to rival Ridge Racers at the very least.  I've included some screen shots and pictures I took of the promotional material if you click the "Read More" link below.

On a different note, you can also get a Logicool PlayGear Initial D Insert for an additional 1,980 yen.  Looks kind of cool and comes with 4 inserts.

Daxter Goes Solo on PSP (CES 2006)

Everyone's favorite sarcastic and irreverent... umm... okay, I'll be honest. I have no idea what Daxter is. Some sort of weasel? A hedgehog without spines? I dunno, you tell me. Anyways, back to the point. Daxter from the "Jak and Daxter" franchise for the PS2 is finally striking out on his own and coming to the PSP. It being CES and all, Daxter happened to fall into the hands of the folks over at IGN, and they've got a full preview of what it has in store. And let me tell you - the news is good. IGN is touting this as one of the best looking PSP games to date, with character animations being smooth and the controls being slick and responsive, a must for the Jak and Daxter series. Daxter will be terrorizing the PSP in March.
One thing that the series has undoubtedly excelled at is animation quality, and Daxter is no different. The animation fidelity here is absolutely fantastic, with Daxter having what is easily the best and most realistic motions we've seen on the PSP thus far. As we've mostly dealt with robotic spiders, it's hard to judge how his opponents will fair, but we doubt it'll be any less excellent. Really, this is AAA animation quality that you only find in a handful of console games.

Along with excellent animation, the Jak & Daxter series has also always had spot-on controls, and again, Daxter has seen this implemented to perfection. The controls are extremely tight, and though Daxter's animations are all blended together for smooth animation, it in no way inhibits your control over him.

This is partly due to the excellent framerate, which in the sections of the game we've seen is smooth as silk. Never a hitch in sight, we're easily reminded of the PS2 series' fantastic visual silkiness. That's not to say that its visuals have suffered for this as the game looks quite good, implementing the classic style from the franchise that we all love. Granted, much of what we played took place in a wine cellar or some such, replete with steam pipes and bottomless pits for whatever reason, but what we've seen looks great.

Dyce9984 from the SE-NSE Forums has come across some leaked photos of what could be the successor to the Sony Ericsson K750 cell phone. Interesting, yes... but what does it have to do with the PSP? Well if you'll look at the screen in the picture (click on it for a larger image), there appears to be a PSP icon there. There is little to no information on this product, but one could speculate that Sony is planning on introducing some PSP compatible mobile devices this year. Maybe you will be able to transfer music and pictures back and forth between your PSP and cell phone... or perhaps even MP4 videos. Your guess is as good as mine. There is no release date scheduled, but Dyce9984 has some unconfirmed information that we'll see more of this product being shown before the summer is over.

CES: More PSP Stuff and Cool Gadgets

Well, Day 3 of the show floor came and went, and now I'm back home reporting to you. The server actually was down part of the day, sorry - I had to fly back from Vegas to fix it <grin>

So here's what I found!

Sony showed the PSP Memory Stick Entertainment Pack, which includes a 256, 512 or 1 gig memory stick with movie trailers, music videos and so forth included on it.

Then they showed their 2700 mAh battery quick-charger which appears to charge the batteries in under 30 minutes and sports an LCD status screen. It looks veyr cool, although I'm still a big fan of Rayovac's 15 minute charger system. I go over how to build a 15-minute battery pack in my book, so you can charge up your PSP while you play it. Fun project :)

Sony also showed demos of games coming for the Playstation 3. While most of these looked like pre-rendered video, along with some in-game play, it was still spectacular. The Playstation 3 will also play abck high-definition DVDs in the BluRay format, backed by Sony and Toshiba. Another competing format, backed by everyone else, plus Microsoft and Intel, is the HD-DVD format. This should prove to be an interesting battle... The first picture is of the PS3, and the second picture is of the PS3 demoing BluRay DVD playback.

Now, on to the un-PSP-related stuff...

How about a Ion (www.ion-audio.com) USB Turntable? If you have a lot of LPs (a.k.a. vinyl, a.k.a. records, a.k.a. "huh?"), this will be a Godsend for you :)

Also from Ion was their iDJ, a dual-iPod DJ mixing station that fully integrates with the iPod...

Another company was showing "Soft Speakers" - cute devices for any system that can take external speakers (like the PSP). How cute! <grin>

I don't know what the following device is, but it was so strange that I had to take a picture of it... It was shown at the Intel booth.

And last, but definitely not least, another PSP video-playback ripoff... the Sharp PMP, or Portable Media Player.

CES: Let the Ripoffs Begin! (Part 2)

Well, I found more PSP ripoffs!

Check out this PSP lookalike from China. It plays music, video, and games. Few details were available and the whole unit is in Chinese (and, of course, only available in China). It was demo'd at the Intel booth.
