Traveller RPG: W.I.P. Update (PSPUpdates)

Psilocybeing, creator of pIRC, has been working hard on a MMORPG homebrew game for the PSP, named Traveller. The RPG will be set in space, and feature a server with support for many WiFi supported PSP clients via HTTP. Traveller will be turn-based in a dynamically generated expanding universe. This reminds me a bit of Tradewars 2002, if anyone can remember that old door game.

In his latest update, PsilocyBeing gives us an inside look of the WiFi workings of Traveller:
Just a 'for the hell of it' post. Here is a screen shot showing 1. a RAW connection to the server, showing what the client sees, 2. the server console(debug disabled, so it will not output every action to the console. I'll be making a sexy admin interface for that), and 3. a screenshot of the resulting render. Client movement/display is complete, and I am now working on the first step of features, the ability to find, and mine minerals from an asteroid which will include inventory, basic equipment, and dynamic generation of asteroid belts. I think it will take a while

You can discuss this upcoming homebrew game in our PSPUpdates Forums [here].

There are many gadgets being unveiled at this year's International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, but the one that we (and Sony) should all be keeping a close eye on is the iRiver G10. Note iRiver also makes MP3/WMA/OGG music players. New pictures and specifications about this device were released today, sporting many features that might make the PSP start shakin' in its boots... or PlayGear Pocket... or whatever your PSP uses for footware. Here's a look:
  • Windows Mobile 5 Operating System
  • 4 and 8 Gigabytes of storage space
  • 3D Graphics Rendering
  • WVGA Screen w/800x400 Resolution
  • WiBro Support (Wireless Broadband, faster than standard WiFi)

Controls for PSP Quake II Revealed (PSPUpdates)

Excitement keeps building over McZonk and TeamEmegencyExit's release of their Quake II port for the PSP. In this update, McZonk gives us full details on Quake II's control scheme including full-blown diagrams. Prepare to be impressed! (Click pictures for larger images)

I think my Quake II PSP is the most configurable game on the psp now :) I added the options for select the analog nub behavior now.
Following options are availiable:
Look: look up and down, turn left and right
Move: walk forward and back, turn left and right
Sstrafe: walk forward and back, move left and right

This should offer a good configuration to everyone. But there are a lot of actions in quake. So I added the headphone remote control too. I worked on a basic layout for quake 2 togehter with Rikki Tikki Tavi. We did't agree in all points so it is good everyone can adjust controls himself.

PMP Mod v1.00 - Homebrew Media Player (PSPUpdates)

Building off of the great work done by JiniCho on the PSP Media Player, Jonny has been hard at work modifying the original program to make it more reliable and released an impressive demo a while back. He has come along so far that he has now released v1.00 of PMP Mod which supports full resolution (480x272) AVI files (DivX, Xvid). At the moment, Jonny is using a custom video "container" so you will have to use the accompanying muxer to make your media files compatible.
  • I wasn't able to crash it in the last 10 days, it should be stable and reasonably fast.
  • Everything is quite optimized, plus, i use a buffer of about 1 second to prevent slowdown on complexity spikes and keep the psp spinning frames.
  • It's programmed in a way that av will never desync (when a scene is too power demanding you'll notice audio skipping).
  • Today i've tested the battery, the app eat ~40% for a 2 hours movie (not bad considering the cpu @333 and the me running).
  • The player is totally rewritten (now i'm using only libavcodec from FFMPEG).
  • Zoom option is still missing (for videos with width and/or height <>

Visit Jonny's site for details about Video and Audio types supported for use with PMP Muxer [here], or in PSPUpdates' forums [here].

DOOM-PSP v0.04 S.S. B6 Released (PSPUpdates)

DOOM-PSP has been a very popular homebrew port since it's initial release, supporting various different WADs and has been modified before. Now, StereoMike has release "DOOM-PSP b6" a modification of Lantus' original DOOM-PSP v0.04. Here's what StereoMike has added and fixed in this great program:
-Added Selection of PWAD to load in addition to the main (I)WAD.
PWADS should be put in a directory below the WAD directory
for example
PSP/GAME/DoomPSP
PSP/GAME/DoomPSP/WADS --put the main wads here
PSP/GAME/DoomPSP/WADS/PWADS --put the PWADS here

Select with triangle.
Can also view txt-files, scroll with Square button.

-Can now load IWADs that are not named correctly. Just assumes that it's a Doom 2 wad.
This makes for example DUKENUKEM.WAD load without having to rename it to DOOM2.WAD

-Music now works fine
Uses samples from the opensource freepats.opensrc.org
Needs these placed in the inst directory. This is included in the package.

-Compiled against latest PSPSDK

-Changed key usage to cross for selection in wad list and circle to go back.

-Changed exit screen to say "press x to exit" instead of "press y to exit"

-Fixed going back one directory by using circle button.

-Rearranged a bit in the code.

You can download it here.
