Variant Interactive divulged the details of their plan to adapt Japanese freeware platform game Doukutsu Monogatari (Cave Story) for Sony's PSP. The move comes as a surprise, but is not without precedent; Alien Hominid, and Every Extend Extra also have their roots in free homebrew software. Cave Story is a compelling mix of adventure and platform game not unlike Sega's classic Wonderboy franchise. Chronicling the adventures of a young amnesiac awakened in a strange land of rabbit-like creatures, Cave Story couples classic platforming action with a free-roaming environment and RPG-like elements.
While Cave Story's original mastermind, a
mysterious fellow who calls himself "Pixel," will not be directly
involved with the project, Variant assures all fans that he has
sanctioned the release and it will be handled with the most delicate of
care. To insure fans of the original will be satisfied, the package
will offer both a direct port of the original, and an "enhanced"
version designed to take advantage of the PSP. At this time Variant has
not divulged specifics as to what these enhancements might be. Suffice
it to say they should be substantial, as the title is slated for a 2007
release in North America.
