Requiem for a UMDream: PSP movies flop, with lessons for Apple

Editor-in-Chief, iLounge

Who wants to pay $15 to $30 for a sub-DVD-quality video? If you raised your hand, consider yourself rare. Over the past year, Sony Computer Entertainment tried to popularize pocket-sized but DVD-priced movies, a market and content it had all to itself in the absence of an iTunes Music Store from Apple Computer. But according to an article in The Hollywood Reporter today, that effort has failed, and there are lessons to be learned as a consequence.

Buy Your Favorite Movies - Again!

One year ago, Sony Computer Entertainment claimed that it had a juggernaut on its hands. In addition to playing games and music, the company’s PlayStation Portable (PSP) would also be able to play back full-length theatrical movies stored on Universal Media Discs (UMDs), one of several features distinguishing Sony’s device from Nintendo’s popular, cartridge-based Game Boy products. Movie playback wasn’t just an abstract possibility, Sony suggested: it quickly trumpeted the support of “several motion picture studios" as “validati[on of] the multi-media entertainment value proposition of PSP,” and itself released several films in UMD format. Amazingly, Sony and these studios were operating under the presumption that consumers would pay DVD-level prices for lower-resolution films they could only watch on their PSPs; they collectively proceeded to release many more UMD format movies, and even built a critical mass of titles. Despite persistent whispers that most people weren’t especially interested, Sony repeatedly suggested that UMD movies were popular, and even claimed that videos - not games - would comprise 60% of UMD sales, with an estimated 130 million UMDs being sold in 2008.

The house of cards began to fall earlier this year. Though Sony took steps to counter reports of sagging interest in UMD movies by claiming that titles were “successful” and “still selling well,” its movie studio partners became unusually candid about the platform’s failings. Warner Bros. openly told film industry trade publication Variety in February that sales were disappointing, and Paramount reportedly decided to stop releasing titles for the format at that point. Today, the signs of gloom became undeniable. A second trade publication, The Hollywood Reporter, ran an article discussing the failure of the UMD movie platform, quoting an executive with Universal Studios who dubbed UMD “another Sony bomb,” and said that sales were “near zilch.” The article also suggested that leading retailer Wal-Mart is dropping support for UMD movies, and that even Sony Pictures had conceded that the format was losing shelf space.

What went wrong? Though The Hollywood Reporter attributed the PSP’s decline in part to “the arrival last fall of Apple’s video iPod,” Sony Pictures’ President Benjamin Feingold claimed that the inability of PSP videos to be played on bigger TV screens was at least partially to blame, along with the PSP’s inclusion of a Memory Stick reader, capable of playing back user-ripped DVDs. Said differently, consumers apparently didn’t want to pay twice for the same movies they’d previously purchased, and didn’t always want to watch them on the device’s little screen.

Lessons For Apple: Watch Sony, Do The Opposite

Putting the iPod’s possible role in the PSP’s decline aside for the moment - a curious point, given that no one is or was selling movie content for the iPod as PSP movie sales slumped - there are other lessons to be learned from this story. The first: as with CDs, most consumers aren’t interested in paying full DVD prices for stripped-down versions of movies - if they were, they’d buy the DVDs. That’s the reason $9.99 album download pricing was the right move for the low-bitrate songs sold through iTunes; to make more money, companies will need to offer an equally good or better-than-physical disc experience. As we said last April, pricing UMDs at $20 was an absurd idea, and unless they offer DVD quality and a superior archival solution, similarly priced movie downloads would be equally suicidal.

HACK HELP: Sony PSP face plate modding

HardOCP has posted an article on modding the front plate your your Sony PlayStation Portable:
Most of you that have the luxury of owning a Sony PSP know that it can be a ton of fun. All of these moments can define the Sony PSP experience. Another thing that defines my own personal PSP experience is seeing greasy finger print smears all over the front of my PSP...

Variant Announces Cave Story for PSP

Variant Interactive divulged the details of their plan to adapt Japanese freeware platform game Doukutsu Monogatari (Cave Story) for Sony's PSP. The move comes as a surprise, but is not without precedent; Alien Hominid, and Every Extend Extra also have their roots in free homebrew software. Cave Story is a compelling mix of adventure and platform game not unlike Sega's classic Wonderboy franchise. Chronicling the adventures of a young amnesiac awakened in a strange land of rabbit-like creatures, Cave Story couples classic platforming action with a free-roaming environment and RPG-like elements.

While Cave Story's original mastermind, a mysterious fellow who calls himself "Pixel," will not be directly involved with the project, Variant assures all fans that he has sanctioned the release and it will be handled with the most delicate of care. To insure fans of the original will be satisfied, the package will offer both a direct port of the original, and an "enhanced" version designed to take advantage of the PSP. At this time Variant has not divulged specifics as to what these enhancements might be. Suffice it to say they should be substantial, as the title is slated for a 2007 release in North America.

The thrill of a job as a air traffic controller comes to the PSP

I have this feeling that most Japanese gamers just sit and think about how the hell we can crank out this many FPS titles. America is silly with FPS games. Of course, there are some things they release that I just don't get.

I knew there were air traffic controller simulations, I had read about them years ago online, and I remember seeing screenshots in a magazine back when people read gaming magazines. It was about what you'd expect, the screen of an air traffic controller. A lot of triangles and numbers.

Well, why not make boredom portable? It seems that an ATC game is coming to the PSP. Air traffic control is a genre that sorely lacking on the PSP, and I'm sure it's hurt the sales of Sony's portable. Or something. Besides, when has EA ever steered us wrong on the PSP?

This could be interesting, I thought Trauma Center sounded silly until I played it. But I aint holding my breath.

SCEE announces B-Boy for PS2, PSP

FreeStyleGames' competitive hip-hop dancing game scheduled to arrive on European Sony platforms in September.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced that it will publish B-Boy for the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation Portable in September. Developed by FreeStyleGames in collaboration with DJ Hooch and Crazy Legs (of the Rock Steady Crew), B-Boy is a hip-hop-themed competitive dancing game in which you'll get to battle against real-life crews and B-boy superstars.

"B-boy culture is one of the four core elements of hip-hop, and the teams at SCEE and FreeStyleGames have managed to put together this game in a way that means the hip-hop community can be sure that the integrity and art of B-boying won't be compromised," said Crazy Legs. "It's great to know that they have actively sought out the real B-boys that make the scene what it is today to make this game happen."

In addition to a number of different arcade modes that you can jump into for instant head-to-head contests (including wireless play for the PlayStation Portable version), B-Boy will feature a single-player "B-Boy Life" mode in which you'll get to create your own breaker and form your own crew. As you progress through the game, you'll be able to upgrade your breaker by learning up to 800 motion-captured moves. As your crew earns respect in competitions at 21 venues from all over the world, you'll encounter around 40 rival B-boy superstars, including the likes of Kamel, Ivan "The Urban Action Figure", Crumbs, Hong10, Lillou, and Mouse.

B-Boy is currently scheduled for release in Europe in September, but no North American release has been confirmed at this time. We'll bring you more information as soon as it becomes available.

New Silent Hill PSP Game

According to 1Up, Konami is working on a Silent Hill PSP title. Not to be confused with the Silent Hill Experience, this will be an entirely new horror title. Besides an upcoming movie, next month will also see "The Silent Hill Collection," a Konami bundle that features Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill 3, and Silent Hill 4: The Room. The set drops April 13, and the flick goes wide a week later.

On a side note, this 1Up news bit was written by former Kotaku staffer, Luke Smith. Regular readers might wonder why his name has recently vanished from our masthead. (We didn't kill him.) The kid took a gig at 1Up, where he has started going by "L.M." We wish him all the best with the new moniker.

NEW HACK: Custom icon for your PSP

Replace the PSP's standard windows mass storage device icon with an icon of a PSP. This cool trick is pretty easy to do just take the contents of either the Type1 or Type2 folder and drop them in the root of your memory stick then disconect the usb cable and reconnect it and it will load the new icon. The file takes up about 3kb so it wont hurt your ability to cram MP3's on your memory stick.

WARNING! Another Fake Downgrader!

Just yesterday, Paulk501 brought to everyone's attention a fake downgrader which is being sold on eBay. This downgrader adds to the growing list of fake applications which are being released by shady people.

I just wanted to warn you guys to NOT buy any PSP-related software off eBay, or anywhere else. The homebrew community is kind enough to give their applications for free. Plus, you run the risk of damaging your PSP when you run fake applications. It could be harmless. Or it could be a bricker. You can never know until you've actually run the application. And by that time, it might be too late.

And if there's any revolutionary homebrew (read : Downgrader, New Exploits, etc.) coming out, you WILL know. Make sure to get your homebrew only off the trusted sites. If you find a fake downgrader/application anywhere on the web, please notify us, so that we can warn all of our readers about it too.

Another Note from Auri: It's OK to buy used games off eBay, of course!

Great Hacking the PSP Book Review on BlogCritics.org

Here's an excerpt from Matt Paprocki's review of my book:

"With the complexity of today's gaming consoles, it's no surprise we need books like Hacking the PSP. The amount of things that can be done to this little handheld is astonishing, and there isn't another book out there on this console that covers this much. The flashy, foil cover isn't just for show. It's there to grab attention away from the other books on the same topic because they're nearly rendered useless."

PSP goes to language school

The PSP isn’t satisfied with just being multi-talented and multimedia – it’ll soon be multilingual too thanks to a new interactive language translator.

PSP goes to language school

As you can see above, the Talkman isn’t just a ‘French for xenophobes’ textbook on UMD – it lets you talk to a cosmopolitan blue parrot called Max via a bundled microphone.

Max is an engaging but schizophrenic chap who changes his personality from language to language.

In ‘talk’ mode, he can offer straight translations and answer questions in English, French, German, Italian or Japanese. There’s also a bookmark function to help you find particular words easily.

If you fancy testing whether or not your German evening class was worthwhile, you can go into ‘game’ mode. Our friend Max will then give you a pronunciation for you to mimic and rate your accent, or let you try and work out the meaning of a sentence in his ‘listening’ game.

Alongside the language functions, the disc also offers handy extras for travelling like a world clock, alarm and voice memo.

It makes a change from the flow of generic, crossover titles like Need for Speed and Fifa. The Stuff office recently discovered the addictive pleasures of Zookeeper on the DS, and Talkman could be a welcome injection of Nintendo quirk for the PSP.

Its UK launch date is 9th June – just when our famously cosmopolitan football fans will be travelling to Germany – and the price is expected to be under £20.

More "PSP2" News: PSP2 In Development?

It wouldn't come as a great surprise if Sony was already working on PSP '2' and a comment by Nvidia's Mary Burnett to Reuters suggests that may be the case.

She implied that Nvidia had signed a big contract to work with Sony on development work for a new project.

'But that means nothing!" we hear you cry.

Ah, but listen....

Nvidia worked with Sony on the new, but as yet unreleased PS3. Nvidia are big in graphics processing. Therefore they must be working with Sony on some new visual jiggery-pokery. What would need such high-level investment in graphics development - the next generation PSP of course!

It's a long and tenuous path that leads us from an idle boast by Nvidia about how much money Sony are paying them to a screaming headline about a new PSP, but we think that the rumour has legs.

Nyko Releases New Xbox 360 and PSP Accessories

Source: IGN

NYKO, the well known gaming accessory manufacturer, has officially announced the availability of a variety of new gear for the Xbox 360 and PSP. The three new accessories are available at retailers like GameStop, EB Games and others beginning today.

Intercooler 360

Perhaps the most critically needed, the Intercooler 360 is a snap-on fan assembly that pushes more air through the Xbox 360, lowering the internal temperature and improving the machine's reliability. A fair number of the peeps here at IGN have had to send failed 360s back to Microsoft, so it would seem that cooling is a bit of an issue. The Intercooler 360 sounds like a pretty simple fix. It's powered by the 360 itself and shuts off when the 360 shuts down, or via a manual switch. MSRP is $19.99.

Intelligent Remote 360

NYKO's second 360 offering is the Intelligent Remote 360. The remote will be able to command both the Xbox 360 and TV. The remote features a learning capability that allows it to absorb commands when another remote is fired at it, backlit buttons, and an auto power on and off feature. Like the Intercooler 360, MSRP will be $19.99.

PSP Charger Grip

Finally for the PSP crowd, NYKO's new Charger Grip addresses two of PSP user's most common complaints, short battery life and uncomfortable grip. Inside the grip's handles is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack that NYKO promises can extend the PSP's battery life by up to 5 hours. The extra juice is consumed intelligently, topping off the PSP's internal battery and then running dry; leaving a fully charged PSP ready for action even after the Charger Grip has run down. NYKO's MSRP for the Charger Grip is $29.99.

We'll be receiving review samples shortly, so stay tuned for the full reviews!

PSP Magazine to Ship With UMDs Loaded with Demos

Future is to publish a bi-monthly magazine dedicated to the PlayStation Portable (PSP) from next month.

Official PSP Guidebook replaces a series of irregularly-published PlayStation 2 magazine specials, largely covering the PSP console, which recorded an average ABC of 31,859 last year.

On sale from 27 April, this is the third magazine dedicated to the console. Imagine bought the monthly title Go Play from Highbury last year while in January, start-up publisher Evolve Publishing launched the four-weekly title Pure PSP with a print run of 40,000.
Unlike existing titles, the magazine will offer playable demos of new games on a covermounted UMD disc.

Future is also in the process of overhauling its ailing unofficial PlayStation titles, PlayStation World and PSM2, to cover the forthcoming PlayStation 3 console, following Sony's announcement last week of a worldwide November launch.

In 2005, PSW's circulation fell 37.6% to 70,077 and PSM2's dropped 25.7% to 54,442.

Future will relaunch both titles this summer, though Sony has yet to award a licence for an official PlayStation 3 magazine to replace Future's established Official PlayStation 2.

PSP vs. DS - One Year Later

As E3 2006 draws near and the great next-gen console war begins to take shape, it's easy to forget, in all the hype surrounding the Nintendo Revolution and the Sony PS3, that there's already a major knock-down, drag-out brawl in progress.

That fight is, of course, between the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP. And it's been a bloody affair. In fact, the portable-format wars have already seen their share of casualties. Nintendo and Sony, for all their competition, can take heart in the fact that the time and money invested into their handheld battle has at least had the effect of destroying all the other competition in record time, from the Zodiac to the Gizmondo to the N-Gage.

And then there were two. The DS is cleaning up in Japan -- the sheer demand for the console there has siphoned every single unit from the marketplace, while PSPs sit unloved on store shelves. But here in the U.S., it's a neck-and-neck race. And, since the PSP launched one year ago on March 24th, 2005, we thought it'd be an excellent time to revisit the past year and gauge the situation as it stands today.

Reports are now starting to come in that Sony is starting to get a little tricky for those of you who run UMD backups via Memory Stick.  In their latest release, Outrun 2006: Coast to Coast, there appears to be absolutely NO PRX files or folders located on the UMD.  Basically, it's going to be more difficult to decrypt the PRX files with the currently available homebrew application, and UMD Loaders such as Run UMD 2.0+ Game Loader and MPH 2.0 Game Loader may run into issues as well.

"But the PSP IS your life" say new ads...

More or less anyway. Sony has released some new ads for the PSP in Japan, where their product probably needs all the help it can get. Two of the ads in particular, the "Good morning" and "Good night" ones, depict a Japanese gal beginning and ending her day with the handheld, using it for everything from listening to music while she vacuums to looking up recipes for dinner and nail care tips (seen on the left there) via the WiFi, and even (Gasp!) some gaming.

Recipes for dinner? Really? Maybe I'm just not devoted enough, but wouldn't it have been easier to do that with a real computer? With..you know..a keyboard? The commercials are catchy, but it's interesting that even this late in the game Sony continues to try to sell the PSP as an "It can do anything!" Swiss-army knife when it's clear many (if not most) gamers just want a solid gaming platform.

EA FIFA World Cup 2006 Site Now Online

EA has opened their website for this year's take on the FIFA World Cup!

At least, contrary to current trends, it doesn't bombard you with startling music and 10 MB Flash animations, opting for a clean, text-reliant layout instead. On the main page, you'll find real-life football headlines linked from the ESPN network, while the navigation bar provides a quick overview of the game's features, the stadiums included, and so on.

As with almost all game sites, expect no wonders content-wise, but it's designed like they're actually going to add a few useful things to it after the launch.

Digg Viewing Site Formatted for PSP

Lucas Steigmeyer has made a cool modification which allows you to view Digg [www.digg.com], a very popular technology news site, on your PSP's web browser. It allows you to read snippets of the latest front page stories. Although once you click on an individual news link, it opens the original Digg page; the website is very useful if you just want to check out the latest news snippets on the go. Although this is quite old, and has been featured on Digg, I get the feeling that only a few people know about it.

Since the modified page uses Digg's own RSS feed, you get the news hot off the front page.

Check it out here.

New Stuck Pixel Fixer Released

Califrag has released his version of color flasher (so-called stuck pixel fixer), LUA ColorPlay v16,777,216. In this program written in Lua, it is possible to flash 16-Million color on your screen. You can have the program looping the whole 16M colors on its own, or adjust the range you want it to flash. There is also a battery life display and a world clock setting in the program.

You can download it here.

Here is a detailed lecture about the dead pixel issue and how it can be fixed written by Califrag. Pretty good for reading:

Many wonder what causes stuck or dead pixels? Well it's pretty simple... the psp's screen is made up of tiny transistors and each one controls one pixel on the screen. (480*272=130,560 transistors!!) So it's very possible that one or two transistors might be bad. This causes a DEAD pixel which simply you cannot do anything with... The transistor is dead and you must replace the TFT screen.

Stuck pixels on the other hand, and pixels which have suffered from a voltage spike or drop, and are set a permanent color on the screen. As the screen refreshes, each transistor receives a certain voltage which displays to corresponding color in the pixel. It's possible to unstick these pixels by giving the transistor the right amount of voltage to trigger that color again and get the pixel refreshing correctly. However with so many possible colors it's hard to get the correct voltage to that transistor to trigger that pixel again.

For more information visit [here]. (I would recommend reading the whole article but that goes right to TFT color LCD screens)

The script I coded will cycle through all 16 million + colors in attempt to catch that stuck pixel. The user can choose to cycle through the colors going Forwards, Reverse or even Randomly. You also have the option to manually increment the R G B values +/- 1, flash the screen full black, full white, full red, full green, full blue and take screenshots. There is a built-in clock and battery level indicator as this does suck up the battery juice pretty well.

Not PSP, but cool: Play NES Games on XBox 360 with this Hack

Xexter on XBox Scene has figured out a way to run the NESCafe emulator on the XBox 360. From his entry:

I've attached a link to a version of NESCafe that works through Media Center on the Xbox 360. This is currently setup to run at 480p (Widescreen). You can edit the nes.htm file if it does not fit correctly on your screen. I haven't found a way to add a menu for the roms list so you will have to edit the nes.htm and change <param name="ROMFILE" value="/roms/whateverrom.zip" /> to whatever Nes rom you want to play. I've included a Public Domain rom for testing but have verified Zelda1-2, Excitebike, and TecmoBowl and all worked.
Please do not ask for ROMs as they are quite easy to find (Google - "Nes Roms"). dry.gif

DOWNLOAD RAR: http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=58730

INSTALL:
You will need to extract the rar into C:Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Media Center\Media Center Programs\ on your media center box. It took a bit for the icon to show up under More Programs but it finally will.

NOTES:
Sound is not functioning, Media Center 2005 is required. If it locks up you will need to run something that warns you that it is a web page and check the box that says "Don’t show this again". Once you do that it should run fine. I created an MCL that just went to Google and then checked that box. I've also attached an image with the mapping of the XBox Controller to the corresponding keyboard keys.

Well there is good news and bad news. First the good news, the network play is working albeit with a few disconnects. Now the bad news, there are some rendering issues in certain games. The developers are working on the problems and although they won't have a release this week-end they will be releasing a usable version of Snes9xTYL 0.4 soon (hopefully in a couple of weeks).

GTA: Vice City Stories Trademark Filed

You may remember a while back that we announced Take2's decision to launch another Grand Theft Auto game on the PSP in 2006.

On March 21st Take2 filed a paper with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the trademark of "Vice City Stories". Now although this isn't stone cold proof that the next game on the PSP will be Vice City Stories, it does add yet more evidence to a plausible theory.

Perhaps we will find out more information with a confirmation when Rockstar finally release the date of Liberty City Stories on PS2 later this month.

Big thanks to Adriaan for giving me the heads up.

Check out the latest love ‘em or hate ‘em PSP spots for Daxter and Pursuit Force from Monkmus and Sony Computer Entertainment. Personally, I’m not what you’d call a fan, but I will say they sure are different from anything else we’re seeing out there. They aren’t pushing “lifestyle” marketing on us, nor are they clogging the ads with rendered footage.

NEW HACK: Do it Yourself PSP Headset Adaptor

Over on the official PlayStation.com a member by the name of JonathanDS posted a guide with instructions to make your own PSP headset adaptor so you can chat in your favorite multiplayer games (like SOCOM:FTB) without buying the official Sony headset. Apparently no stores near him were selling the headset so he made his own and his guide is pretty good. The final product (pictured to the right) should be able to use and 3.5mm headset, like the ones used on cell phones. Even better, it might be ably to use wireless headsets. Have a ball with hand-held 'Katamari'

One of the most quirky and beloved video game series in recent memory has rolled its way onto the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP).

Namco's "Katamari" franchise for the Sony PlayStation 2, which includes 2004's "Katamari Damacy" and 2005's "We Love Katamari," made its mobile debut Tuesday with "Me and My Katamari."

For the uninitiated, these cult favorites star an inch-high alien, the prince, who is sent to Earth to collect stuff for his dad, the King of All Cosmos, by rolling items into a sticky clump, or katamari. Your goal is to amass objects into a growing snowball-like katamari by first rolling over small items, such as thumbtacks, playing cards and erasers, and then larger ones, including pets, people and cars.

"Me and My Katamari" retains the peculiar charm of its award-winning predecessors.

Review: WWE Smackdown vs Raw: 2006

WWE (or WWF formerly) has been a passion for generations; people have loved the sport for decades. The fans of wrestling aren't satisfied merely by watching the wrestlers, they want more than that. Hence the rising popularity of wrestling games. WWE SmackDown vs. RAW has been the ruling franchise for wrestling on the PS2 and now it has arrived on the PSP.

New Season
WWE SmackDown vs. RAW on the PSP is at par satisfaction. The game delivers the same perfection and fortitude it's known for on the PS2. It is visually spectacular, has great quality sound and boasts of awesome gameplay. There are a few flaws, but nothing that should degrade the total package.

If you have played the earlier versions of the game on the PS2, you would feel at home. There are a few changes and a few new modes of play, but nothing that will require learning. The game runs so smooth that you wouldn't realize that it's been played on a PSP. The biggest flaw in the game would have to be the really lengthy loading time. The game takes at least 5 minutes to start, but if patience is your virtue, you will be rewarded with a great game. The game also offers good sound and completely engrosses you in the virtual arena.
