Flash Player for PSP Released! w00t!

PSPHacks.net has teamed up with RK Digital.net, Heavy.com Newgrounds.com and 71M to put out SWFPlayer v1.1. SWFPlayer v1.1 currently runs on v1.5 firmware, and is being tested for compatiblity on 2.x. Currently the player is a little buggy when playing flash files that use MP3 sound due to the fact that MP3 decoding requires too much memory, however PCM sound is fully supported, and hopefully the MP3 issues will be sorted out soon.

Another issue that is being worked on is loading times. As a “proof of concept” release, there are plenty of fixes currently being worked on, an the source will be released in a couple days, once it is cleaned up. The source will be released in the hopes of involving more developers in code cleanup and bug fixes

For installation of the PSP Flash Player, simply decompress the file into your x:\PSP\GAME folder. After that, you can place the flash files anywhere on your memory stick. The SWFPlayer comes with an included file browser to allow you to locate the flash files, after which you simply highlight it and press X

Microsoft gaming handheld to be released on March 2???

A rumour from Gamespot:
What we heard: Ever since CES in January, rumors have been circulating that Microsoft may soon enter the handheld market. Most of these sprang from a BusinessWeek article, which cited an anonymous source inside the Redmond, Washington-based software colossus as "working on plans to develop its own portable digital media device to rival the iPod." Speaking hypothetically, Xbox marketing chief Peter Moore said any such device would also have gaming functionality. "It can't just be our version of the iPod," he told the magazine.

At the same time, one of Microsoft's signature teaser Web sites sprouted up at the URL www.origamiproject.com. Via some slick flash animation, the site asks visitors "Do you know me?" "Do you know what I can do?" "Do you know where I can go?" It then promises that, "You will ... Learn more on 3.2.06."

Given the looming launch of Windows Vista, many assumed the site was part of the effort to help hype Microsoft's new PC operating system. However, over the weekend, reports surfaced that Project Origami is actually the code name for a new portable that combines media-player and PC functionality.

The evidence came in the form of a video clip that was uncovered on the Web site for the film-production company Digital Kitchen. The clip, which has since been taken down, showed a "concept device ... noticeably larger than the iPod and somewhat bigger than Sony's PlayStation Portable," according to the Post-Intelligencer. The video also "shows people using the device not only as a music player, but also as a miniature personal computer for accessing the Internet, sending e-mail, editing photos and playing video games."

What games, you ask? A copy of the video viewed by GameSpot clearly shows a user playing what looks like a handheld version of Halo in a train station, and an image in the Post-Intelligencer's gallery of stills also shows the Bungie game on the portable's screen. Unlike the side-scrolling spin-offs that were once rumored to be coming to portables, the Origami Halo looks much like the same graphic-intensive first-person shooter that has become legendary on the Xbox and PC.

[UPDATE] However, it remains unclear when--or if--gamers will be able to get their hands on a mini Master Chief. Instead of busting out the usual "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation" boilerplate, reps for the company admitted the video was legit. "While Origami is a concept we've been working on with partners, please know that the video seen on Digital Kitchen's web site is a year old and represents our initial exploration into this form factor, including possible uses and scenarios," a Microsoft rep told GameSpot.

Though reps wouldn't comment on the Halo footage specifically, their references to "possible uses and scenarios" means the footage was likely for demonstration purposes only. "Everything in the video was 100 percent pure concept, so take nothing as an indication of what may or may not be in any such final product," a source close to Microsoft told GameSpot. "I'm sure they just took some Halo footage and stuck it in there since it's a Microsoft property."

So will the portable device have gaming functionality? Hopefully we'll know soon. The reps also said that details on the Origami Project would be revealed "in the coming weeks." Maybe they should have said "the coming days," as the date on the origamiproject.com is this Thursday--less than 72 hours away. Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus that something is getting unveiled on March 2--and we can't wait to see what it is.

Sony Japan Announces PSP Downloadable Content Hot Spots

Sony Computer Entertainment Japan has unveiled PlayStation Spot, a service that allows PSP owners to download limited use content and game demos at participating locations, according to news translated by Gamasutra from the official Sony Japan website.

Starting today, Japanese PSP owners can use the service at certain locations of Gourmet Pia, a higher-end "composite cafe." Over 150 Gourmet Pia locations will feature the service, with more locations being added daily through mid-March.

Content is downloaded through the PSP's "Gameshare" feature, meaning that demos can not be saved onto a memory stick, and are deleted from memory once the unit is powered off. The service is available only to PSP users running firmware version 2.0 or above.

PlayStation Spot comes on the heels of Nintendo announcing a similar upcoming service in the United States. As of press time, neither specific Gourmet Pia location details nor available content has been revealed.

Sandisk announces $240 4 GB Memory Stick - Possibly $180 soon!

I found this post today from zmcnulty on PSPVault about a $240 4 GB Memory Stick Pro, and a prediction of $180:

This doesn't come as a huge surprise given SanDisk's Memory Stick Duo/PRO Duo products have typically been cheaper than Sony's, but they have also announced a 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo.

According to the press release, this one will be available for a retail price of $239.99 in March. Not only is that cheaper than Sony's offering, it's sooner. It also means I was right after all about my speculation, just in case you're keeping score at home.

I guess it's also worth pointing out that these cards are in SanDisk's "Ultra II" line, which is geared towards professional photographers. There's a chance SanDisk may also introduce a 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo in their "normal" line. SanDisk's current price structure indicates their "normal" sticks are, on the average, 25% cheaper than their Ultra II sticks -- if we apply the same pricing system in this situation, a "normal" SanDisk 4GB Memory Stick PRO Duo should go for something like like $179.99.

More IIF (Infocom) Games Confirmed Working Under RIN

CaptJello has emailed PSPUpdates an updated list of the working Infocom Interactive Fiction (text adventure) games working under the RIN Emulator for the PSP. Here is the detailed message from him:

It has been a productive day! I have been able to get the following Infocom Interactive Fiction (text adventure) games working using the RIN Gameboy emulator:

  • Zork I
  • Zork II
  • Zork III
  • Ballyhoo
  • Deadline
  • Enchanter
  • The Lurking Horror
  • Infidel
  • Moonmist
  • Planetfall
  • Sorcerer
  • Spellbreaker
  • Starcross
  • Stationfall
  • Suspect
  • Suspended
  • Witness

Zork1onPSPI have found it is better to use the DOS utility INFGMB.COM to create the Gameboy ROMs instead of the DOS COPY command in my earlier message because it ensures the cartridge header and image size are correct.  Again the INFGMB software with documentation is available [here].

And we all know where to get RIN for PSP  =)

Zork I, II and III are publicly available.  For the other Infocom titles, you'll need to either dust off your old Apple II, Atari, Commodore or IBM disks, or Google "Infocom games" to find a variety of classic game retailers.

Credit goes to Martin Korth, author of INFGMB and Mr. Mirakichi creator of the RIN Gameboy emulator for PSP and Infocom for producing such great adventure games of the early PC era.

Thanks to CaptJello for the update.

DS Lua Preview Build for Nintendo DS

(Not *exactly* PSP related, but this means that, to some extent, homebrew for both platforms can be compatible :) -Auri)

The famous LUA language which has been the driving force behind many PSP homebrew developments, has now found its way to the Nintendo DS. Here's to hopefully, many great new LUA DS developments.

DSLua version 0.1 Preview Release

I was surfing the web one day and found Lua Player on the PSP (http://www.luaplayer.org). It prompted me to look into LUA and how it works. I was a bit surprised at how easy it is to incorporate LUA into my own code and how simple it is to write scripts in Lua. This is the reason I started writing a Nintendo DS version of Lua.

This release contains some very basic functions to give you a taste of DSLua. You have access to functions to display texts, read the controls and access stylus information. It's about enough to build a simple text based games (like the good ol' days of DOS)! Check out the Examples directory for examples on how to use the functions.

Supported Hardware

Well, you need a Nintendo DS first. None of the emulator supports a media card at this point, so DSLua can't run off them for now.

If you don't know how to run home brew softwares on your Nintendo DS, then check out GBADev's Flash Equipment forum (www.gbadev.org). DSLinux (www.dslinux.org/) forum also have some instructions.

DSLua depends on the ability to execute a script that is external to the engine. For that matter, DSLua currently only supports file accessible by Chishm's FAT driver (compact flash card using the GBA Movie Player or M3 devices only). Adding more media support on my To Do List.

I have a flashed DS and M3 with Compact Flash. So, that will be the platform that gets most testing. ;)

Files/Instructions

To start DSLua, simply select from one of the binaries that suits your hardware and copy it to your media. Also copy the lua scripts that you want to run onto the same media (you can try the scripts in the Examples directory). On the M3 for example, you can press START button to run DSLUA.NDS or press A button to run DSLUA.SC.NDS. Once the program is running, you should see a directory listing of what is on your disk. Press up and down on dpad to select the script you want to run, and press A to start the script. When the script is finished, you can press START button to return to the directory listing menu. Enjoy!

It is simple to write a script for Lua. Just use your favorite editor (Notepad for example. My favorite is SlickEdit). And then copy your scripts to your media card. Run DSLua binary on your NDS and select your script to run it.

Please have a way to exit your lua script, that way the users can exit your program and be returned to DSLua's menu to run other programs/games.

PSP to get update with camera and 4GB memory

Click to ZoomThe Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) has been on the market for quite some time, and has challenged Nintendo's supremacy in the world of portable gaming. Just as the Nintendo DS recently received an update – the DS Lite – it seems now that Sony's portable gamer is about to get an upgrade as well, except the changes are more than simply cosmetic.

Sure, the PSP2, as it has come to be known, might be a quarter-inch thinner than the currently available unit, but more interestingly, word is that the new PSP will come with 4GB of NAND flash memory, as well as an integrated digital camera. Expect white, black, and silver varieties.

This is contrary to earlier reports that there would be 8GB of embedded storage, perhaps in an attempt to keep the price a little lower. The digital camera will not be a new development altogether, as it seems the PSP2 will make use of the camera used in some Sony Ericsson phones. The cam will be placed where the PSP logo currently lies, just underneath the screen, and will be used for video-streaming to the forthcoming PlayStation 3 (whenever that hits the market. Your guess is as good as mine) and "as a Wi-Fi way of chatting with friends."

Flash player for PSP - February 28th?

The PSP Flash Player contest has ended and the player is due to be released on February 28th!!! I'll have more details come the 28th, but I have spoken with some fellow developers who have tested the betas and the player is very operational, and should have full sound capabilities when it's released. Looking forward to it!

Here's the text from PSPHacks.net:

PSPHacks Flash Player Coding Contest Winner
Written by Pikoro
Thursday, 16 February 2006
We have a winner in the swf player coding contest.

I just want to officially congratulate 71M from our forums for successfully producing a fully functional SWF player that runs on the PSP.

A few notes concerning the player from 71M:

The player supports Flash 7 action script. Not everything mind you but a good portion of it.

As for limitations, I would say that people will have to bare in mind that the PSP only has 32mb of RAM.

3mb of that is taken up by the program itself, so there isn't much room left.

Having complex vector shapes is also a bad idea as the shapes are triangulated and produce massive triangle lists.

The bottom line is, try it and see what works and if someone is creating a new animation for the player they need to keep testing it to see if it still works.

Sorry I can't give anymore information, but there are so many combinations to cover that I wouldn't be able to list them all.

It might be better to let the community find out for themselves what works and what doesn't.

Maybe run another competition to see who comes up with the most innovative game with the player? :D

--------------------------

So, starting on the 1st of March, we will have a flash coding contest.  Let's see who can come up with the best flash game for the PSP now that the media is available.

The code is still being cleaned up so we will release the PSPHacks.net SWF player on or about the 28th of Febuary.

Cheers

Sony Dumps Metreon, Keeps PlayStation Experience

Wow... I remember when Metreon was being built! -Auri

From Kotaku:

If you’re going to San Francisco, be sure to make it to the Metreon. Or don’t. It was never that great anyway, and now Sony is selling it off to a mall developer and real estate group. The “urban entertainment destination” will still house Sony’s Playstation store and Sony Style store, but look for other tenants to vacate the premises soon.

I was at the Metreon this past fall to visit the PlayStation store and walked away disappointed. Not only wouldn’t the staff let me play Guitar Hero on the BIG TV, but there just wasn’t much to distinguish it from any other Sony Style location.

Nintendo 64 Emulator Making Progress

PSPmonkey's updated his blog with some good news on his progress on an N64 emulator... 60fps (frames per second) Pong!

From his blog:

Mmmmm Portable Pong Emulated Goodness
Posted on Sun 26 Feb 2006, 3:58 AM

Mmmmm *drool*

Well after some back and forth I figured a few things out. For some reason I dont need to byteswap the pif ram where pc emulators do. So with this and a few corrections I got input working. Even better is the fixing of SI transfer now keeps a few homebrew games from crashing.

So here are some screenshots of Pong by omar, Liner (I dont understand the point of this game), Manic Minor & MM hiden levels (oddly enough its very dark), & the wonderful n64 logo returns from waverace (do note that no comercial games run, this just this logo shows up since it draws to the framebuffer with no use of the rsp/rdp).

Anyways enjoy. More updates to come when more progress is made.

Zork Coming to PSP?

So it’s an emulator… inside an emulator? This is kinda of a weird one folks, and I’m having a hard time wrapping my brain around it. I’ll be honest, it’s 3am as I type this and I can’t imagine writting up a better description than what CaptJello emailed into us just a few minutes ago. So here you go, instructions on how to play Zork using an “Interactive Fiction” interpreter meant for the Nintendo Gameboy by using the RIN emulator on your PSP. Make sure to let us know how it worked out for you in the comments.

Does anyone there remember the great text adventure games of the late-1970's-1980's from Infocom? Does "You are standing in an open field west of a white house..." sound familiar? Imfocom published dozens of them, most noteable the Zork series. You can find much history and some public downloads (including Zork I, II, and III) [here].

Zork1onPSPThese wonderful "Interactive Fiction" text adventures had a story part and an interpreter engine. The games were published on many platforms of the day (Apple II, IBM, Atari, etc.) by simply re-compiling the intepreter for each different platform. A while back, a fellow named Martin Korth wrote such an interpreter called INFGMB for the Nintendo GameBoy.

By combining the publicly-available story file of Zork I with the INFGMB intepreter into a Gameboy ROM file (ie. under DOS simply type "copy /b infgmb.bin+zork1.dat zork1.gb") you end up with a ROM that you can play with the RIN Gameboy emulator for the PSP!

Since the INFGMB Interpreter was written for another keyboardless handheld, it has some nice features making it tolerable to input text commands for these classic adventure games (such as being able to select keywords that are already on the screen and DOSKey-like recall of previously-entered commands). Thus far, I have only been able to get Zork I to work.

Source: PSPUpdates

Note from Auri: Of course, with no keyboard available for the PSP, and with Logic 3 wigging out and canning their PSP Keyboard project, text-based games aren't gonna take off quickly... Of course, it'll be interesting to see if Sony releases a keyboard and to see whether Logic 3 sues them 'cause Sony wouldn't supply the info Logic 3 needed to create a keyboard in the first place. :-P

More PSP 2 Rumormill Blurbs

Is the PSP about to gain new features to square up against the DS Lite...

Citing an "anonymous source", PSPWorld has recently suggested an upgraded PSP is currently in the works, presumably as an attempt to gear up towards the impending second bout against the DS Lite.

Suggesting that the model will alleviate the typical PSP storage problem and help to realise its true media possibilities, the article alleges that the unlikely titled "PSP 2" will include 4GB flash storage as standard, and follow the DS Lite model by trimming 6-7mm and offering the device in three colours - black, white and silver.

Based upon the accuracy of the source, further reasons to be frustrated if you've already shelled out for a PSP, include the introduction of the previously rumoured EyeToy like digital camera. Beyond its use as a digital camera, PSPWorld suggests this will also open up the possibility of streaming video from the "PSP 2" to the Playstation3 via the heavily speculated "HUB" service.

Given Sony's inclination towards re-inventing the Playstation, it's somewhat inevitable that Sony would take a continuous look at ways to reduce its manufacturing costs; however evidently concerned by the DS performance during 2005, it's entirely possible that Sony would also look to make improvements.

Whether Sony would welcome such a launch, whilst speculation continues to rage of problems facing the Playstation3, however is an entirely different manner; it's also worth adhering to the liberal dosage of salt required with "anonymous sources".

Coming Soon: Mortal Kombat Unchained for the PSP

Fatalities in your fist.

It's hardly the secret of the world but it's been a while since we heard anything about it. Originally scheduled for a release late last year, everything went quiet and it may have been assumed that this venture was dead and buried. Midway has recently revealed new information on Mortal Kombat Unchained, the first Mortal Kombat game to hit the PSP. Despite the new subtitle. Unchained is still pretty much a port of Mortal Kombat Deception, which hit consoles back in 2004.

For this title we can expect to see multiple fatalities per character and multi-tiered interactive backgrounds that we enjoyed in Deception as well as six new fighters. The game will offer playable versions Kitana, Jax, Frost, Blaze, Goro and Shao Kahn. The latter two were incidentally available on the GameCube version but it never reached PAL shores. Depending on your perspective, it's either better or worse that the Konquest has come to the PSP as well. Here, you can embark on a single-player mission with heightened character control, computer-controlled characters and hidden extras. It's good to know that Midway decided to include it, because it adds some meat to the title (even if it can be dodgy at times).

Chess and Puzzle Kombat have made it over as well. There's even an all-new Endurance mode where players will contend with waves of combatants. It's unclear whether these modes will come locked, or whether you will access them straight out of the box. The game will make use of the PSP's wireless Ad-Hoc functionality. Currently, Midway has revealed that Unchained includes head-to-head matches, but there's no word on other multiplayer modes or play over the internet. It's set for release sometime in Q3 of this year.

PALGN will bring you more information as it becomes available and maybe even a screenie or two.

Does it take over six minutes to load Smackdown vs. Raw on the PSP?

I actually sat through this entire video twice before I wrote this post, to see if I could find any hint of foul play in the making of this video. That means I spend almost 15 minutes watching loading screens. You still think this job is easy?

There is nothing totally obvious, it did seem like one set of menus came around twice, and the time when there is absolutely nothing on the screen seems a touch long to me. Loading screens before the actual loading screen? Ouch.

I've sat through some pretty terrible load times in PSP games (and Madden seems to load evey few seconds no matter what you're doing) but this is insane. Can it really take over six minutes from startup to get to gameplay? In portable gaming I think anything about a minute or so is too long, and I think ideally it should always be around 30 seconds. You turn the unit on, and go.

So what do you guys think? Fake? Anyone with this game willing to actually time it themselves and see?

PSP Camera on a fast track?

Stuart, one of our readers, managed to catch a snapshot of this mysterious ad that is making its way down the rails of London trains lately. It’s pretty obvious that this ad is trying to build up anticipation for a future PSP camera accessory – you can see the accented camera icon in the lower right hand corner. A camera is probably one of the most desired add-ons for the PSP (aside from a keyboard) and it’s nice to know that the campaign has already started to warm up.

Control Your XBox 360's Media Center With Your PSP!

This program was a big hit when it was released a few weeks ago. I guess there’s nothing better than controlling your Xbox’s Media Center with a PSP. Maybe we just like to see Sony and Microsoft getting along in a warm ‘n bubbly way. Today, Jonny2002 released a newest version of the XBMC Remote Music Interface furthering the love story between these two consoles. Here’s what’s been fixed up in the latest version, but be sure to check the release thread for installation instructions and more info.
  • Added playlist support
  • Added support for album art
  • Added skip to previous/next song with L/R-trigger
  • Added fast rewind/fast forward with analog stick.
  • Added "controller mode", enter with Start.
  • More informative error messages.
  • Better network recovery when bringing the PSP out of sleep mode.
  • Playing SHOUTcast streams (and probably also ITunes streams) caused a crash.
  • Increased the timeout from 7 to 15 seconds during transfer of data, accessing internet streams would sometimes timeout on slow lines.
  • Fixed a bug with parsing of SMB shares containing domain name.
  • Fixed an index off by one bug in the network selection screen.

There is a deluge of software available for transcoding audio and video files from one type to another, but many of them specialize in certain files types and many of them will cost you a large some sum of money. That's why MediaCoder stands out above the rest (via Jake Ludington's MediaBlab). The beauty of MediaCoder lies in several areas. For one, it is absolutely free. And in this case, you get much more than you pay for. Free, however, isn't everything.

It can convert to and from various sources. It can read MP3, OGG/Vorbis, ACC, MusePack, WMA, RealAudio, FLAC, WavPack, APE/APL and WAV files on the audio side. Video sources include AVI (Xvid/DivX/H.264), MPEG1/2/4, QuickTime, WMV/ASF, RealMedia, MP4 and Matroska. It can also read CUE Sheets, CDs, VCDs and DVDs. It can convert those audio sources to MP3, OGG/Vorbis, AAC, AAC+/Parametric Stereo, MusePack, WMA and Lossless codecs FLAC, WavPack, Monkey's Audio (APE), WMA Lossless, and WAV. It can put your video into H.264, Xvid, DivX 4/5, MPEG1/2/4, and H.263. Additionally, while going back and forth between formats, you can adjust compression or customize the target for use on devices like Mobile phones, PDAs or even the Sony PSP. All in all, it looks like a real winner of a product, though your mileage may vary.

iRiver to Compete with the PSP? Whoa.

Best known for its low-cost audio players, iRiver raised a few eyebrows at CES this year when it showed off the iRiver G10. With a 4-inch, 260k color LCD, the G10 is both a gaming console and a media player, pretty much along the lines of the Sony PSP. But unlike the PSP, the G10 runs Windows Mobile 5.0 and includes WiBro networking for online game play. So far only two game titles have been announced for the G10, and it's unclear whether developers will line up to support the device. But there'll be plenty of time for that since the console won't hit the streets until August, its scheduled release timeframe for the Korean market.

Sony's PlayStation brand strongest in the industry

The Sony PlayStation 3 and the PSP have the highest percentage of brand awareness amongst consumers according to Forrester's latest report on the video games industry (which we covered earlier, twice). The mail based survey (of 10,000 households in North America) found that 72% of North American consumers have heard of the PlayStation 3 and a full 6% plan to buy one, despite the fact that Sony has yet to announce a final feature set, a release date or the console's price.

The Sony PSP came second on the chart of consumer gaming device awareness - 65% of consumers have heard of the PSP and around 3% plan to buy one. It's clear that Microsoft's Xbox 360 console faces an uphill battle if it wants to wrestle the mindset of North American consumers away from Sony.

Amusingly--and probably unsurprisingly--none of the consumers that had heard of the Infinium Phantom said they were planning on buying the console.

What Sony, Microsoft must do to win in North America

From the same Forrester report we've been blogging about for the past few hours comes an analysis of the next-generation console war and what Microsoft and Sony need to do to win the battle for North America. Differing from the Japanese and European markets, North America is looking like a relatively even playing field. It's here that the battle between the next-generation consoles will be the most obvious.

If Microsoft wants to topple the PlayStation's dominance in America it's got to do a couple of things. Firstly, the company has to capitalize on the early success of the Xbox Live Marketplace by allowing more Internet delivery of content. In other words, Microsoft needs to prepare to bust open its Trojan horse and enable full game downloads via Xbox Live. Downloadable movies, MP3s and similar content couldn't hurt either. Secondly, Microsoft needs to push its Media Center Edition connectivity feature to the forefront of the home entertainment niche. Vista's built in Media Center functionality should help Microsoft in this respect.

If Sony wants to hold onto its crown and deflect the Xbox 360 it needs to make its own products and departments work more effectively together (we'd say the same thing for their PR teams). With the Sony PSP, PlayStation 3 and Sony Ericsson cellphones, Sony has the opportunity to increase multi-platform sales by allowing games to persist across its platforms. The report offers the example of seamlessly transferring a customized Killzone squad from the PlayStation 3 onto your PSP. This standardized networking has great potential in strengthening game franchises. That means Sony has to kick its habit of creating pointless media formats (ie stop with the proprietary formats already!).

More from the Forrester report:
PC market healthy, shows signs of growth
Consumer attitudes to gaming are slumping
Sony's PlayStation brand strongest in the industry

UK TV actress voicing Lara Croft in new Tomb Raider game

Keeley Hawes, star of BBC series MI-5, will be the Tomb Raider heroine's new voice; game due in April.

Last month, many sites reported that British actress Rachel Weisz would be the new voice of Lara Croft, blue-blooded heroine of the Tomb Raider series. Though publisher Eidos Interactive would only say an announcement was "coming soon," the choice seemed logical. Even before she was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for the thriller The Constant Gardner, the actress had a high profile with gamers, having starred in the popular Mummy films. Also, given the fact Weisz is currently several months pregnant with the child of filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, who is directing her in the forthcoming sci-fi romance The Fountain, she'd probably be up for an undemanding-but-lucrative voice-acting gig.

However, like many premature reports, the Weisz-as-Croft rumor turned out to be dead wrong. This week, Eidos announced that another actress will be giving Croft her upper-crust diction in the forthcoming multiplatform release, Tomb Raider: Legend. And the winner is...Keeley Hawes?

If you're asking yourself who Hawes is, you're not alone. While a familiar face in the UK, most North Americans will be unfamiliar with the 29-year-old veteran of British television. Her highest-profile roles in the US were on the TV drama MI-5 (aka Spooks), which was on heavy rotation on BBC America, and the big-screen comedy Tristram Shandy: A *** and Bull Story, which was a hit at this year's Sundance Film Festival.

"Lara Croft is such a strong and powerful character, but she also has an edge to her, which was great to portray vocally," Keeley said in a statement sent to the European press. Matt Gorman, Eidos' head of the Tomb Raider franchise, said "she had the right balance of aristocracy and attitude" to play the blue-blooded adventuress.

Tomb Raider: Legend is set for release in the US on April 11 for the Xbox, PlayStation 2, and the PC. Xbox 360 and PSP versions will ship "shortly after," according to Eidos.

New Game: Rush races for PSP

Midway returns to streets of Los Angeles with new missions, exclusive battle, and stunt modes.

Midway is set to put the pedal to the metal again this fall, as the company has revealed the first details on Rush for the PSP, the latest in its long line of California-based cruising games and the first for Sony's handheld.

Like last year's L.A. Rush, the PSP Rush will include a story mode set in a shortcut-laden City of Angels, which will feature more than 50 rides (at least 36 of them licensed), some of them downright pimped-out rides courtesy of West Coast Customs. However, Rush will also include some extras, including 30 new cruise missions, a hip-hop and rock soundtrack with new tracks from Lil' Kim and Twista, and the ability to play any cruise mission with another player by way of the PSP's Wi-Fi capabilities.

Also featured on the PSP Rush will be stunt arena and battle race modes. The latter mode will let players go head-to-head with each other in a power-up-propelled race to the finish, while the stunt arena calls upon players to launch their cars off ramps and sail through the air performing various twists and turns before (hopefully) landing on all four wheels. As in the stunt mode in the Dreamcast version of San Francisco Rush 2049, golden tokens that unlock extra content in the game will be placed amid the mayhem.

Rush for the PSP is set for release in September and has not yet been rated or priced. For more from Midway, check out GameSpot's sneak peek at the company's upcoming press event.

GTA: LCS Game Loader Version 1.0.0 for 1.5 PSP's

GTA : LCS Running on 1.50 Firmware!

Everything was working out peachy for PSP Gamers, or so they thought as they started to enjoy the homebrew and their current PSP games off the same handheld earlier this year. Then Sony started releasing firmware updates. This update not only added a few nice features for video / web browsing but at the same time disabled the homebrew exploit, KXploit.

This is where MPH comes in. When a PSP is upgraded to 2.0, Sony had temporarily prevented all previous forms of running homebrew on the PSP(hacks that ran via Kxploit), with the help of determined and noteworthy developers such as Groepaz and MPH, among others they succeeded in releasing a downgrader from PSP System Software version 2.0 to 1.5. Thus allowing PSP gamers to have full access to their PSP's again.

Sony has been relentless and has been releasing more updates, 3 individual updates, in fact since the last time the PSP was blocked and then rehacked. Some updates are purely "preventative" ones. That "prevent a hacker from bricking your psp" (aka reblocking the ability to run homebrew.) While others actually serve a purpose, from the likes of adding Location Free connectivity to simple RSS feed integration.

This latest update from MPH won't cease to amaze, as MPH announced that they have succeeded in launching Grand Theft Auto on his 1.50 version PSP. Loading GTA as a UMD or ISO for that matter was futile previously on 1.5 PSP's, since GTA requires files in the 2.0 library in order to function. This resulted in people needing to update to 2.0 in order to play GTA on their PSP or have another PSP with 2.0+ System Software. Needless to say this is a major step forward in fully unlocking the PSP so gamers may do whatever they wish with a handheld that they purchased for their enjoyment.

In order to run this exploit you must have the following:
- GTA:LCS official Game or ISO Backup (that you must create from your legally owned copy)
- You will need umd emulator, umdgen and a tool called DecryptPRX which is no other than a modification of the psardump tool of psppet.

Disturbing "disruptive" PS2 ad

TBWA, one of the world's largest ad firms, is responsible for the ubiquitous neon iPod ads and the unfortunate PSP graffiti ads that have municipalities all riled up. They call their unique brand of advertising "disruptive." They break it down this way, "TBWA = Disruption." Alright, got it.

I suppose the above PS2 ad is disruptive then, if you accept that disturbing can be disruptive. Sure, the male/female electrical outlet faces are pretty creepy, but the shirtless dude "watching" them is what really pushes this one over the creepy cliff. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have an inexplicable desire to really play some PS2...

Next PSP to get built-in camera, video streaming

The next version of Sony's PSP will sport an integrated digital video camera that will allow users to stream live video to the PlayStation 3, according to an anonymous source. The feature, which will utilize the PSP's Wi-Fi support, will be marketed as the new way to chat with friends while on the go.

According to the tipster, the "PSP 2" will also gain the recently rumored NAND flash storage, though the first generation of the new model will only be available with 4GB instead of the 8GB currently speculated. Sony will also trim approximately a quarter of inch from the device, and offer it in three color choices — black, white and silver.

Sources claim that the tiny camera will be an off-the-shelf stock unit that is currently being used in several Sony Ericsson mobile phones, and will also allow users to take still photos, in addition to video. Its placement will be directly below the PSP's screen, where the "PSP" logo can currently be found.

(Note from Auri: Wireless video conferencing, anyone?)

The new PSP's video streaming capabilities will be considered a must-have addition for Sony's upcoming PS3 console. While details are scant at this point, sources say the streaming will be made possible through the upcoming HUB PlayStation service, which will launch alongside the PS3 and compete directly with Microsoft's Xbox Live service.

We'll provide more details as they become available.

Revolution SDKs cheaper than PSP ones, say devs; final dev kits expected to be made widely available in June

IGN's hearing from studio insiders that Revolution SDKs (Software Development Kits) are selling for about $2,000, "which is thousands of dollars cheaper than a PSP SDK, let alone an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 one," paving the way for riskier titles with smaller investments to appear on Nintendo's next system. (Note from Auri: It's practically impossible to get a PS development machine out of Sony unless you're a very, very big-time game development house. Bumr.)

Citing the 1,000-dev-kits-shipped statistic from the recent Engadget interview with Reggie Fils-Aime, IGN Revolution went ahead and talked to "a half dozen studios around the globe for further details about the nature of the kits." Apparently, "three revisions of the development kits have been sent out to studios" so far, with "minor tweaks" and boosts in power (to a GameCube with wired Revolution controller attached) accounting for the different versions. Larger, more committed publishers may already have access to updated hardware and a wireless remote.

An "official fourth SDK prototype" will soon be sent out so the likes of EA and Ubisoft can start getting their playable demos ready for E3, but final dev kits aren't "expected to be made widely available" until June. While this doesn't change the consensus that the Rev will only be "roughly twice as powerful" as the 'Cube, at least this similarity in architecture will make development of next-gen titles easier (and more exciting with the innovative new controller). A $150-$200 price tag would certainly help the system's marketability as well. The proof will be in the playable pudding.
